Funny that you should mention this, because Slackware is probably one of the few Linux distros you actually *can* install with your eyes closed (not talking about scripted). I've installed Slackware on PCs without monitors before;)
I have a credit card through Capital One, and their website barfed on Mozilla for quite a while. I emailed them about it, and one of the problems they gave was an inability to test the site with all the versions of Mozilla (at the time, all we had were milestones and daily builds). As soon as Moz 1.0 came out, I emailed about it again. They said that they were working on it and a few weeks later, it worked!
I encourage anyone who's having similar problems to email the tech contact for an offending website and let them know that you care.
It was a reference to the Japanese animated series Serial Experiments Lain. In the series, the Internet is called "the Wired". And computers are called "Navis". But yes, our representatives might be wired in that sense, too. =)
"These new entities are going to be more human than human."
Mmm... References to Blade Runner and 2001 in the same article... and they admit that they programmed nothing into this computer other than a preference for pleasure over pain. No Asimov's laws of robotics, nothing (I know, where they started, it wouldn't have been able to interpret them anyway). What if the computer is a sadist? Do we really need AI to perform the tasks they outlined in the article (taking care of all the arrangements for a trip, for example)... Not that I am against AI, but we need to think more about what we are getting ourselves into...
The shocking thing about this is not that the MPAA is trying to scare people out of their right to free speech - we've come to expect that out of them. I got the same letter and I removed the DeCSS code from my website because I really can't afford to get entangled in a lawsuit over it. What really amazes me is that the university ordered Dr. Newby to remove the files. This shows that universities really do care more about corporate interests than free speech and the autonomy of their professors.
