Sorry if this question is remedial ed for most of you, but it's bugged me for some time now. When I first saw Akira -- at the UC Theatre in Berkeley, circa 1990 -- the version I saw was undubbed but had subtitles I haven't encounted again. Dark and surprisingly witty, these subtitles were liberally obscene and quite obviously unsanitized.
In the years subsequent to this screening, I watched VHS versions with both dubs and subtitles, but neither used the same translation, instead opting for highly bowdlerized readings seemingly aimed at at-risk children or adult inmates. The film lost much in these translation, IMO.
Some of you must be familiar with the variety of translations I'm talking about here. Was there ever a VHS or LD release that featured the original, R-rated script in its subtitles?
