All those replies and not one mention of XML as a candidate replacement for Latex? I'd have thought that more than one output format would have tempted a few people to consider docbook XML source as a reasonable option.
The arguments about the campus 'elders' not wanting to change rings true, although XML offers so much more today than Latex.
