If this is one of the people in your organization that you need, without whom everything would go to hell, you're damned right you should.
This is called taking hostages. I agree, there are some people that are extremely valuable, but if they are such a pain in the ass as to need extra special coddling, shouldn't they be gotten rid of? I mean, come on. We live in a society, not e therapy circle. No situation is worth putting up with _anyone_ who is a total asshole.
As to the humanity arguments, you are all correct, but I still think that I am not wrong in wanting to choose the humanity that I acquire, rather than having it foisted on me by having to deal with morons all the time.
The point can go on forever, b/c you can never excape morons who talk too much about things that have no relevance.
This guy has found a way to get the best out of his people, to make sure they can concentrate on their jobs; to be better on their jobs. Is that wrong ?
For him, no. And for someone who doesn't think that people should have some intrinsic self-sensoring mechanism that tells them, "I am wasting his/her time and mine by saying this, let me shut up" it is fine too.
And point well taken, Money, about it only taking a few minutes out of any one day, but there is all the angst built up while your toes are clenching in your Kenneth Coles. What toll does that take? How much does that cost after 10-years of the same incompetent, slovenly person telling you about the carrots on her desk? And you just taking it?
Now it feels like I am the one in therapy!
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."
In my limited corporate IT experience, I have never seen a manager that could take the place of one of his underlings, even the help desk heads. The majority just don't like to learn the techy stuff. They like meetings.
The exception to what I have just said is in fast food, or in "customer service". There you will see where a mgr. can take the place and boldly step in when someone doesn't show up.
Call me an elitist, but should I really have to deal with someone's neurotic need to tell me every detail about what they've done on the job since the last time I saw them?
I mean, sure if you are friends, you take a certain amount of this type of stuff, but if you are at work, with a limited amount of time to do what's to be done, then get home and lead your _life_, is there really time for this?
I always get annoyed with people at work who buttonhole me into needless conversations, and I'm not even their manager. I just think it's inefficient, and I would rather be doing something else.
It sounds like you are more of a therapist than a manager. And that's fine if that's what you want to do, but what about the coding that needs to get done, and the deadlines? I am not at work to be an altruist, frankly. I am there to kick ass and glorify myself, while being adequately compensated.
Maybe that's the difference between being a "people person" and being a curmudgeonly technician. I don't know.
You checked one of the Page Writers out yet? Kinda' limited as to what you can surf, but you can customize your news flash stuff. For e-mail it's pretty rad though!

Ahhh you misunderstand the power of the Borg.
