Movix [movix.sourceforge.net] is exactly what you seek! It runs from a live CD and I can get it running DivX's smoothly out of my nvidia tv card on a pII 266! The picture quality is ok and the system reports few dropped frames. Still it dont have the convenience of my X-Box mind you!
