I say we revolt, an absolute ban on anything music related, no concerts, no cd purchases, nothing, we support those who endorse promotion and distribution via MP3 110%. We flat out copy, and trade EVERY mp3 possible, just to make a point, that they can't stop us. As a single entity MP3.com lost.. but as a group, all of us.. the 100's of thousands of mp3 supporters show that every time we buy a cd we feel cheated. MP3's are not about pirating it's about getting what WE as consumers want.
So I say, let them sue, let them try to stiffle our consumption of quality, let them think that they have intellectual property, let them continue to sue and take legal action, the fall of the few, will only strengthen the will and power of the many!!!
Not one of those platforms have standardised their binary format on the Linux ELF binary format. They've announced support for running those binaries on their platform. Each platform has their own binary format, IF they had standardised on the Linux ELF format, any binary available on Solaris/SCO/BSD would also run on Linux, which the last I checked is not possible.
This website is to promote awareness that RedHat is NOT Linux, RedHat is RedHat, just one of the many distributions of the Linux Kernel tied together with many many GNU applications.
As of now, Any Linux binary will run on any linux distribution, reason? the C library. So your remark about "fairness" is irrelevant.
And to promote 100% compatability, porting the source to be compatable with individual platform is necessary and much more beneficial. Just because a binary format is supported doesn't mean it runs 100% compatable. Only native binaries ensure that, and the only way to do that is to port the source.
I think this announcment certifies SGI's commitment to linux. They've opensourced many of their key proprietary IRIX features.
Many of you seem confused by what this announcment means, it gives us the ability to make Linux B1 certified on specific hardware, in a networked environment, etc, etc. Microsoft may tout that WindowsNT4+SP6a+C2patch is C2 Certified, but it's that system in that network configuration that's certified, not all generic systems and configurations, just the ability to achieve C2 certification exists... and that's what SGI wants to provide.. the ability to make Linux B1 certified.
I don't know much about the certifcation process but this is a great step forward for adoption of linux in government systems (maybe now we'll have a reliable, SECURE Government that has no IT excuses left except their incompetence:)
There is nothing holding up XFS. The Source has been released, any leagal disputes have been squashed. Won't matter a little bird turd if they want to buy it to resell it or not.
The corporation didn't win in that one, Pokey.org was set free.. Pokey.Org Set Free. It was a claimed misunderstanding, but regardless.. the corporation didn't win..
With the release of Windows2000 we saw the introduction of a new computer, user, group managment system. Microsoft included some ability to be backwards compatible with WindowsNT Servers, Microsoft also included the ability to run Windows2000 in "native mode." which effectivly disallows any NT client/server from participating in it's user management. How will this affect Samba? Will Samba include Windows2000 "native mode" support, also will the AD tools used to administer a Windows2000 Server be able to administer a Samba server?
I've always viewed Slackware as the all purpose workhorse of the Linux distributions. It's always done things better and faster in the server role. Now as everyone is pushing to get Linux on the desktop, I'd like to know what Slackware's Direction in this area. Will it remain focused on playing the server role, or will the distribution splinter into different job roles, or will it follow the crowd and push for the desktop?
I've had some suspision that CmdrTaco isn't as unbiased when it comes to news submissions as we all suspected. I'm sure many people posted this long ago, why didn't it make it up until today??..
Granted he must receive 1000's of posts a day, it could have been missed, but I've noticed important news posted on LWZ sometimes never makes it onto/.
If you look through their website, you'll find various previous consumer reports from earlier years, and if you read the press releases, you'll notice that the demographic for the 15-25 age group steadily decreasing every year since 1988, hrmm.. kinda funny since I don't recall getting mp3's in 1988. The RIAA is playing the music industry for a fool, they report that mp3's are causing a decrease in sales, but the sales of music increases every year (by about as much as it does any previous years,) interesting isn't it.
That's just the nature of the install procedure, upgrading is easy, just download the package you want to upgrade from the slackware-current directory and run installpkg from/, rather simple method if you ask me (much better than going rpm -puke -thissucks -microsoftstyle whatiswrongwithtar.rpm:)
Firstly: What new age movies have you been watching, the current trend in bandwidth is to cap general users and leave only the technical elite and rich to the good stuff. (this is a bitter point of view, yes I know) Secondly: Do you usually write comments with a thesaurus handy?.. Since when is it proper english to tack "less" and "y" to loss?..
The type of resources I was specifically adressing was memory. As defined in many books on computer hardware, "resources" always refers to memory and NOTHING related to the cpu.
"Winamp deliberatly took amp's code and wrote a shell around it" HAH!. I scoff at thee, if you'd care to read the documentation included with winamp 1.x and some of the early releases of 2.x you'll see that there's full credit, and even legal licensing information aswell. Which, last time I checked, allows them to sell it. Besides, you don't have to pay for it, you can use it for as long as you wish, and nothing will happen it won't criple like most mp3 players I've seen.
You sir (or lad) are precicely what is wrong with the online community today, uninformed and uneducated.
BTW, you woudln't notice a resource difference if you're using the same mp3's. Decoding != resources. Decoding = cpu cycles. And there is a difference, just you don't know how to see it.
Isn't this WHAT everyone wants? No relaying of emails through their servers??

I think it's a good portion of the WORLD who pronounce it "rooter". It's the basterdized US English that pronounces it "rowter"
Why is it so odd that HP put in a bid? HP has for a long time offered UNIX solutions to companies, it's quite understandable that they'd put in a bid.
Ron, 2 words.... woo hoo
