  1. Re:but that's the whole point! on Ex-Microsoft Employee On Unix Within The Empire · · Score: 2

I use M$ or even Micro$oft because of how far they will go trying to get another dollar out of their customers.

Example 1: The fact that Office 97 formats cannot be read by Office 95. So when about 1/3 of the people you corresponded with upgraded, it forced you to upgrade too.

Example 2: Ghost Licensing Issues. If you purchase a new system and then want to use a Ghost image file to configure it, then you cannot count the software licenses that came with the new system, that is not permitted by the license. You need to use other copies with licenses that permit "Imaging". Effectively this forces many companies to purchase 2 licenses for all the software they want to install on a new system. Read the licenses, it's in there!

Example 3: The old licenses used to allow a single user to install a copy of the software at work and at home, as long as only that one user used it. In the last few years, M$ changed that and tied the license to the machine so that in order to have a copy at home and work, you need to purchase two copies. Funny how this happened AFTER M$ achieved dominance in the Office Suite market....coincidence? I think not.

I could go on and I'm sure there are dozens of other examples but I think you get the point....

INNSHO, Ghost in the Shell is the best anime movie around. The story is an interesting look at the future when computers and robotics are integrated into peoples bodies. They refer to your soul as your ghost, and even deal with a hacker that can reprogram the ghost. The animation is incredible and the story is one of the best I've seen. A must see!

    dmg,

Let me guess, you're a home user. No you won't have use for this large a storage device in the near future but many network admins work with much larger storage devices already. And while I can't speak for others, this certainly has me interested. I've had to manage as much as 240 GBs of data when 10 GB hard drives were the biggest we could get out hands on. It would have made my life a lot easier to have all that data on one drive rather than spread out on 24 (more when you count the 'lost' drives in the RAIDs).

Additionally, you have to remember this is a SOLID STATE drive. No moving parts, the tranfer times will be almost as fast as your RAM or cache. While this may not seem like that big a deal to a home user, this type of speed will allow developers (Web and other) to do more processing on their own systems and then transfer just the results to your computer. Which means better content can be delievered to the customer. Do I see a immersive 3D Slashdot environment in our future?......maybe.......lol

I have a couple of problems with this article. First, who is this Nelson person? Beat me with a clue-stick but without some credentials, I don't trust his opinion any more than that of the average joe (or jane). Second, this article is obviously a press release by Network Associates. Since their software runs on the windows platforms, they have vested interest in promoting the windows platform at the expense of everyone else. Hey, its just marketing and lets not give it any more credit than that. Enough said, Dave
