Uh.. what the hell is a "top-flight professional consultant"? How does it compare to "bottom-flight professional consultants"??

  2. sounds like.. on Details of the PCWeek Securelinux Crack · · Score: 0

Sounds like the exploit used on cron has already been addressed (well before the PC Week "test").. if anything it proves that a secure Linux/UNIX server first requires a competent System Administrator.. something PC Week doesn't seem to have or cared to seek the advise of when setting this system up. At anyrate the "test" proves nothing other than default settings aren't secure on old (RH 6.0) distro's..

  3. Perhaps a name change would suffice? on Red Hat's Certification Program Questioned · · Score: 1

Actually that sounds like a very viable idea. Say PHB at MegaCorp X has decided to take the LinuxPlunge(tm) and move some servers from AIX/Solaris/NT/whatever to Linux. After the Distro of Choice(tm) has been selected the PHB could qualify prospective candidates for SysAdmin(etc) by their Distro specific Certification AND their General Linux Certification.

I mean there *are* certain things that are unique(dubious) to each Distro and PHBs (being the singular minded people they are) will look for something like this; however the General Linux Certification would ensure not only the PHBs but Real People(tm) that the candidate is of quality.

I've had the request in for time off since December (damn that Lucas, moving the release date forward cost me dearly in "favors" rescheduling my time off).. The article estimates that Star Wars will draw the same amount as Lost World.. I think a better judge would be Independence Day.

Guess that newly acquired Linux box is collecting dust now that Katz is spending time at either the movie theater or the adult book store.

*long rambling rant to begin, skip it. you've been warned*

I've been reading Katz's work now with little interest and even less concern. Until today. After reading his latest entry, I have (yet again) a new outlook on Katz. He's literally coming from Compu-Nowhere and is trying to grapple with (to many of you) simple concepts. Give the guy a break.

How many of you can replace the headgasket on a Honda B18C 1.8l DOHC engine? Being an auto mechanic is a skill that is part training and mostly experience. Thus, being a SysAdmin, Programmer/Analyst, or "Guru" is the same.

Just chill on flamin Katz. I (as a reformed flammer) would like it if more people like Katz would "Take the Linux Plunge(tm)".

Anyway.. I've gotta dd some streamers to DAT.. ugh

If you *really* wanted to get Linux installed, and by yourself, you could have just spend maybe $400
for the same (or similar) hardware that you just bought, and loaded RedHat (or Debian, SuSE, Slack)
and just merely followed the prompts (accepting the defaults) and loaded everything.

No muss, no fuss (unless you bought deviant 3rd world hardware made by Sadam & Co.).

After all, that's what the vendor did when they sold you the "preconfigured/preinstalled" Linux box.
