  1. App compatibility is the key on Microsoft Pleads With Consumers to Adopt Vista Now · · Score: 2, Informative

I've had experience with Vista both as an upgrade and as a supplied install on a new PC (Both Dell machines).

Bottom line - there is not enough support from key apps out there to make an upgrade to Vista sensible right now, and general performance kills it for most people.

    Examples:

    - Poor nVidia support
    - Nero 6 doesn't work, so you need to buy an upgrade
    - Peripheral devide support is poor, but again, you can buy upgrades
    - deskop indexing kills the machine
    - Aero glass keeps breaking due to app clashes (e.g. Quicktime)
    - The overwhelming number of confirmation pop-ups is an extremely irrating feature. One struggles to imagine how Microsoft designers feel this is a good model. Most users won't understand the questions being asked (or the implications) and will simply keeping clicking "allow" until the windows stop popping up.

Both machines now back on XP Pro and working very well.

  2. It was pretty good, better than Dapper on Upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy Eft a "Nightmare" · · Score: 1

I upgraded my laptop from Dapper to Edgy using the upgrade path. It went really well.

Not only did the upgrade work okay, but Edgy performs much better than Dapper, and now I have suspend and hibernate working out of the box, wireless working etc.

With the wide variation in hardware out there it's not surprising that people are having problems, but at the end of the day the Ubuntu upgrade path is far far better than anything else I have tried. Windows upgrade anyone?

  3. Treating customers poorly did it on Palm's Mistakes · · Score: 1

    Hi,

As a first time Palm customer I bought a Tungsten T2 the day it came out. Has a couple of drawbacks but generally a nice product.

However, they retired the T2 after just a few months, bringing out the T3. The resale value of the T2 went down the toilet, and there was no cheap upgrade offer from Palm for recent T2 owners.

    Felt cheated by Palm.

    IPAQ for me next time.
