When a character rotates his head, so the camera gets the side, the recognition gets lost. The person then shows up as unknown. It sounds so simple to link a face that changes from known to unkown (rotating head) to each other, solving the unknown.
Example is episode 66 at 6:53 where mccoy = unknown, when kirk moves in front of him, afterwards mccoy is known. There is a bit of a gap, but some reasonably smart algorithm should not be so difficult to cook up.
