It works well until such time that the side you don't agree with ends up in power and decides what is or isn't "political" speech has changed.
How well do you think such a system would have worked here in America after Obama got elected (or how about while Bush was President)?
Without a concrete and absolute freedom, the rules can be changed at will to mean whatever you need them to mean to protect your side.
The VC should be considered about as unbiased as it gets when it comes to First Amendment issues. The number of times it has ever sided with an effort to restrict speech could likely be counted on one hand.
