  2. Thats odd... on Slashback: Mainstreaming, Lux, Ports · · Score: 3

I run GNU/Linux+KDE on a 300Mhz AMD system with 128 MB RAM and an old ATI Rage Pro graphics card (PCI) with a 6 GB HD. I run Apache, IBM WebSphere (on a different port), a couple of Netscapes, and I always have at least 5 kedit windows, soundtracker, and a few terminals open. My system flies compaired to my old Windows setup not to mention the huge gain in stability (and six desktops to fill up with programming goodness). In windows, if I had Netscape open, an edit window open, winamp playing, and tried to compile a Java app my computer would reboot itself (which took quite a long time). My system has never crashed while running Linux. In fact, the only time I turn my computer off is when I install nifty new hardware.

Seeing as how you have about twice the machine I do, your computer should have absolutely rocked under Linux. I think if it was slow you must have had a video driver problem as it is fairly easy to pick an unaccelerated video driver.

On the RAM issue, why are you complaining about 217 MB being reported as used when you also say you know about caching -- it's not as if that RAM is locked up -- Linux will give the RAM back when an app needs it.

  3. CSS is not copy protection. on 2600's Response to the DeCSS Decision · · Score: 2

    People, please repeat after me:

    CSS is not copy protection.

I can't believe how well the MPAA has pulled the wool over so many peoples eyes. CSS does not prevent copying. CSS does not make copying difficult. The ONLY thing CSS does is prevent Linux users from watching their DVD's that they just shelled out $20-$30 for.

While I'm on the subject, Macrovision is also not copy protection. Macrovision forces people to shell out $70 for a deMacrovision device so they can watch DVD's through their VCR if they have a TV with RF only inputs.

What I would do is buy a DVD and return it if the content won't play in Linux. Keep returning the DVD's untill they give you one that is not broken. A CSS'd or Macrovisioned'd DVD is a broken DVD!

Can you imaging how bad off the world if people created for love rather than money. Great artists would be forced to strive to achieve a higher standard in every work created or be pushed to the sidelines when a greater artist comes along.

    Bah...

I ask every advocate of intellictual property this -- "What if painting had been patented, or perspective, or any other great leap forward? How about fire??"

We live in a world evolving at an ever increasing pace. Why should we try to stop progress in the name of profit for the few?

Sorry to rant. It's late. Good night.

...And a powerfull IDE using mozilla would have an easy time making killer features like line by line code step-through and variable tracking (because the IDE has the same code as the target platform).

Add to this the fact that Mozilla is going to run on everything from Linux to Mac to Windows to Name your favorite OS and its easy to see how much easier our lives are going to be when coding crossplatform apps.

On security, the Moz team will either make a sandbox or nobody is going to use Mozilla so I'm pretty sure they will think things out with great care.

  9. Maybe they are not worried about hardware sales. on Apple Builds Darwin For Intel · · Score: 1

What if they are not wanting hardware sales anymore?

If OS X ran on x86, hoards of programmers would recompile every open source app they could think of to run on it.
Then Apple could use the huge application base as a marketing gem.
Finally they sell bazillions of copies of their easy-to-use OS with all the power and stability of BSD and Linux.

So, having a full MacOS run on x86 (meaning Intel, AMD and Crusoe), IMHO, would give Apple a pretty huge oppertunity to make a ton of money from all the people who already have a computer but are fed up with Windows and don't have the know how to install Linux or just want somthing new.

I don't know about everybody else on slashdot, but 99% percent of the computer programming skills I have came fron the internet. The other 1% is split between college classes and books. An online university could offer direction while leveraging the huge amount of information available on the internet. Students would however miss out on learning how to deal with a beurocracy and miss out on social interaction. A remedy for that could be requiring students to join a political party or work at a government run organization and require students to go to house partys every Friday. I hope it works. I would love to give it a try. -Andy
