I don't understand how my post was 'redundant'. My post was one of the earlier posts (March 5th 2:23 PM) in the discussion. I have also read through the other posts to date and I don't see the some of the same ideas as mine. Why was it deserving of a 0?
the actual article on MSNBC says "... next fall, students at the University of California at Irvine can begin taking courses in the university's newly announced Interdisciplinary Gaming Studies Program. It's the first step toward a "major" in gaming."
So, it isn't a major in quake but possibly in gaming...
Its about time that a University recognizes that the Gaming industry exists and has needs for specially trained programmers. Also, from the description in the article it sounds like it will be a pretty hard class. I think this will course will require the best of the best programmers. The most talented and creative.
I hope that they also address running a business as some of most successful of 90's programmers/creative teams had business failures.
My other thought is:
This could be just another way for the University to hit an industry up for donations.
hmmm... what is next? infomercials on the cel late at night?
Do banners actually work on web-sites? Obviously commercials on TV have success. I don't know about this concept. If cellphone technology gets improved and they make it so that the digital phone that they said wouldn't suffer from dropped calls or interference (that I bought) actually doesn't drop calls or have interference...
... I'm all for that.
As far as privacy goes... if you want to stay private in the US... good luck. You would have to get rid of your Social Security card, credit cards, grocery store cards, etc much less your cellphone to be anywhere near private.
Brother, I think you should seek the advice of a good financial planner. I'm thinking that you should consider your choices wisely before making any large financial decision.
Your financial planner will be able to guide you towards an educated choice. They might even suggest that you support your local church or charity. I'm thinking that you might feel more community spirit by helping your fellow Germans that are less fortunate than you.
Also, some thing else to consider: the common thread between most millionares of today is that they hold on very tightly to their money. The other common thread is that they did it over a long period of time (not through IPOs).
I don't think that it is a matter of "I'm so good and so much better than anybody else".
Rather, more a difficult decision that our brotherhood of nerds has been asked to help make the decision easier. He will probably have a guilty conscience if he makes a poor decision. Most of us try not to judge so harshly.
Public perception of network security tools such as l0phtcrack can only be hurt by this. The public perceives these tools to be the tools of "hackers" and not legit tools for network analysis.
We have MTV, movies, and other bad press to blame for the public not understanding the difference between hackers and crackers. The public is not educated in the fact that these tools are used by (and in same cases, were designed for) systems administrators, security officers, consultants and anyone that wants to learn about OS vulnerabilities.
I guess the point is that if there is enough bad press because a tool is misused, sometimes the tool is banned or its use restricted. I don't think that would be good for e-commerce or network security.
Export of High Performance Computers (HPC) are restricted based on Millions of theoretical operations per second (MTOP) or the aggregate of Composite Theoretical Performance (CTP). See http://www.bxa.doc.gov/HPCs/Default.htm.
Countries are broken down in to Tiers and are subject to export license restrictions based on Tier and CTP. There is a chart at http://www.bxa.doc.gov/HPCs/ctpchart.htm that shows the provisions.
And if you dig deeper into Parts 740.7 and 742.12 of the Export Administration Regulations you find this:
exerpt from Category 4 - Computers
b. "Digital computers" having a "composite theoretical performance" ("CTP") exceeding 2,000 million theoretical operations per second (Mtops);
c. "Electronic assemblies" specially designed or modified to be capable of enhancing performance by aggregation of "computing elements" ("CEs") so that the "CTP" of the aggregation exceeds the limit in b.;
How the US Government thinks it could ever enforce this with Beowulf is beyond me...

Now I understand your idea of OpenSource... I doubt he will want to contribute his 20,000 USD to your project.

Just because you have problems doesn't mean this guy should donate his money for you to see a mental health practioner.
Besides, I'm thinking 20,000 USD isn't enough judging from the damage you've probably caused yourself...
