The BSOD's and random power off's are defiantly hardware issues.
It could be dying ram or maybe vista is just causing the system to over heat. Vista does stress the system more than openSUSE will. Another perhaps the most likely explanation is a power problem. Maybe a dying battery. That's exactly what my desktop did when the power supply started failing.
