I spent quite some time looking at tech books on Amazon last night, and can't honestly say I'd be thrilled if it were possible to read 10-20 pages at a time from a technical book I'd written.
As opposed to, say, going into Barnes & Nobel and drinking coffee while reading the whole thing free?
No... there are actual CD-Rs sold specifically for consumer devices to write redbook audio to. They are more expensive for no good reason. See also: Canada's CD piracy tax...
Humor is like that. The funniest things are personal in some way, statements/situations that you can relate to. So for something to appeal to a large audience, it will need to be very broad and/or very shallow - a clever, carefully-crafted joke would be lost on the majority, who it would not apply to.
Look at the reported "funniest joke" study done in the UK a while back. I don't think i've every heard someone go into fits of laughter over it - at best, a smile and a chuckle. But it had broad appeal.
"The Majority" is neither stupid nor crass. They are simply diverse.
Ok... i really shouldn't reply. Ah, what the hell. Yes, $2000 is a big deal. $2000 is a big deal to me, with no kids, cheap housing, and a good job. $2000 is sure as fuck a big deal to her. About the only people who wouldn't think $2000 is a big deal are probably making ungodly huge sums, possibly as lawyers or executives for, oh, say a large music industry association.
It was an attempt at sarcasm. If you don't think it's funny, then just ignore it, 'k?
As terrible as her crime was, everyone needs a second chance. This $2000 slap on the wrist, while barely an inconvenience for the family, will surely be a reminder for the girl later on.
I agree that much of the Doom source code is quite nice. For me, its beauty comes from its simplicity; the logic is split well, and free of unnecessary optimizations. Reading through it helped me greatly back when i was first learning C.
This is because you sip your coffee, instead of chugging it like a Real Programmer.

Just smile and nod, and keep looking...

Stay on the straight and narrow, Brianna!
...you're a SICK, SICK, CANIBAL, and -
*cough*
