What, did they take memory OUT of the G5s to purposely f*** them on that test? 128MB? Yes, they suck like that (and, incidently, don't sell with less than 256 on the lowend, 512 for the machines in question).
In the cases WHERE THEY ACTUALLY COMPARED TO A MACHINE WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF MEMORY, the G5 was still smoking. Plus, they put the g5 up against machines with RAID? Who the hell is fooled by bs stats like this?
I love the opteron, but gimme a break, this test is shite.
Period. If you're tall like me you don't fit in an accord or lesabre or basically any car (except older high end american parkave types), you pretty much have to get an SUV. And I don't mean one of those little xterra jobs either, I mean a big sucker.
The thing that kills me is I don't want a huge car -- I want a car big enough for me, a passanger, and for some groceries/duffel/suitcase.
Someone make a civic hybrid with leg and headroom and they'll have cornered this niche.
I develop client side (swing) apps for OS X, linux and windows as well. I use my mac as my primary machine, despite the fact that its SO DAMN SLOW. Compilation using javac is ridiculous, jikes is much better but nothing to write home about. But for running swing apps osx sucks rocks. haven't played with the new 1.4 beta yet but it has to better than this (right?).
For general use osx is acceptable (iff you have jaguar) but definitely sluggish on all but new (last 6 months) machines. I wouldn't even bother unless you have at least 512 memory (I'm not kidding), especially if you run classic or have many windows (i'm a terminal fiend!).
Initial installation is not usually the problem (although i ran into some with MkLinux). The difficulty comes when you want something that isn't included on the distro. Or just configuring and using things, as the documentation is always geared toward x86.
If you haven't run into issues compiling software, then I can't believe you have run linux on a ppc for any length of time. Compilation issues are all over.
I can't imagine many people reading newspapers at their computers. However, tt would be nice to get a very small scanner that could store all the addresses you came accross during the day (especially if bar codes are incorporated into other media). Then just upload these (wirelessly) when you get time near a computer and take a look.
Why do businesses insist on keeping their prices under lock and key? I have no desire to interact with their sales staff, much less be on someone's email list. Don't they realize that consumers can and will go somewhere more convenient?
