I think that a post singularity civilization might, instead of exploring the cosmos, disappear into "inner space" by uploading their minds into computers, and live out their lives in virtual fantasy worlds.

"A Deepness in the Sky" is set in the same universe, but if I remember correctly the whole books takes place in the slow zone.
