It's wonderful that RMS won't have any children. We didn't need any more extremely rude, heartless bastards in the world that are capable of sending letters like this.
So he's a bit opinionated...there are quite a few intellectual programmers who through social isolation, arrogrance and ignorance manage to upset people with their opinions
But that does distract from their acheivements and the good they bring to soceity through their innovations.
Whatever his personal opinions he should be remembered for his GNU manifesto and above all else for EMACS.
For EMACS alone I would forgive him anything.
Incase you think I'm a heartless bastard myself for defending him, I became a Dad myself last summer and I feel able to judge myelff a 'family man'
Churchill, Stalin, and the British people thought they won the war Hmm I'm sure the Americans on/. won't thank you for omitting their major contribution to the war effort.
Your argument is flawed...Whilst the Germans have learnt from the past and are committed to a united peacful Europe, they more than anyone else should have a moral duty to help restore those stolen artworks to their rightfull owners.
England should not be responsible for acts committed by the Nazi's after all we fought to free Europe not to enslave it.
British people thought they won the war We only won the war militarily.
Economically it helped Germanys industry in the long term, most of their industry got flattened and we helped rebuild their infrastructure after the war.
Our economy was so drained by then that it cost us our empire and Germany ended up being the economic centre of Europe...so who really won ?
How quaint to find someone still uses a landline...
Teleconferencing has been around for years and the only people who seriously use it in education are the University's Directors.
Even something as primitive as First Class makes a better communication medium than a videophone.
Videophones were just a big con instigated by the phone companies to wring some more profits out of their land lines before they go the way of the dinosaur
Except the only time you normally have holograms is on television is Red Dwarf or Star Trek.
Using it in the real world for lectures is innovative even if the audience is seeing something like television but more interactive.
You missed the point...
- have youseen many holographic newsreaders lately (max headroom excluded)
- has your television presenter talk back to you and analyse points you made out loud.
I was at an ILT conference and someone mentioned that trials had been conducted in the US to use holographic projection to allow virtual lectures.
The idea being that lecturers would be able to speak from remote locations as if they were physically in the lecture theatre or could present simultaneous lectures in different locations.
Its sounds like a useful aid to distance learning in instances where a lecture is more suitable than say just using web based learning materials.
For lectures and traditional CMC discussions it sounds ideal
Nah use the Starfire Interface, it's still ahead of its time and would give users a simpler interface.
As Sun don't seem to make use of it, perhaps they could open source it ?
As for OS X its good but its still evolutionary NOT revolutionary, the best thing about it is that its based heavily on unix . The GUI is an improvement but it still relies on the WIMP metaphor.
Dammit even Microsoft have experimental 3D user interfaces being tested and are at least trying to design using new metaphors. Its only because Microsoft uses a pale bloated imitation of unix for their OS (NT/2000) that Apple is still in the running.
Now chaps if you lived in a true democracy this would never have happened.
Soon you will probably elect a new president who did not win the biggest majority of votes cast.
You have election officials who are openly affiliated to political parties and yet you expect unbiased Judges ?
You have a bill of rights to protect your citizens, yet unjustices like this can happen because of the uncorroborated word of a police officer...hmmm something is not right.
I know before I get flamed the electoral system in the UK is even worse, at least you have a bill of rights
I just wish Oceania was real and not some marketing mans hoax...
You may need him more, but I'm just damn jealous you've got him in the first place.
I saw that speech he made after the voting and I was blown away.
You could argue that he is not really a politician:
- No evidence of 'spin doctors' writing his speech
- Appears to be honest
- Seems to have developed coherent policies
rather than trying to second guess what would be the most popular policiy with the voters.
- No real corporate influence over policy making
- No apparent skeletons in the closet
I saw his speech on CNN today and unlike the Greens over here he sounds lucid & electable, looks like the kind of politician you could actually trust, and unliked our greens is not just some crazed extreme environmentalist.
Any chance we Europeans could have Nader represent us, as you Americans don't seem to want him ?
Dammit I'd vote for Nader if someone could only ship him over. The only politician we can really trust over here is Martin Bell, a few more would be appreciated.
There is no interface to speak of, you do everything through the "Hand of God".
Do you mean Maradona the "Hand of God" ?
Well someone had to say it...
There are some people that would say EMACS is the one thing he can't be forgiven for. ;)
;)
Only those people who use Vi or Vim

Any particular reason why Slashdot is always running rampant with Anti-MS FUD
/. posting are of slashdot readers and do not necessarily represent the views of the slashdot team.
Slashdot is an openly 'nix and open source biased site, most people here simply don't like Micro$oft for personal and/or ethical reasons.
Remember the opinions on
Wow I thought the Blue Man group was just a marketing exercise invented by drones at intel.
They really exist and they use Mac's !!!
So the ad should really say "No pentiums were harmed during the making of this advertisement"
Next question... Will they come over to Europe soon ?
Churchill, Stalin, and the British people thought they won the war /. won't thank you for omitting their major contribution to the war effort.
Hmm I'm sure the Americans on

After the release of W2K, Linux has no real stability advantage anymore
Stability ?
Stable like the American Warship that was running W2K during a training exercise and suffered the legendary BSOD?
That damn warship was dead in the water for at least 1/2 an hour...long enough to get sunk in a real emergency.
Remember the Y2K crises never happened, the W2K nightmare is only just starting
Well man was not designed to walk on two legs but we seem to manage OK.
I've used a telephone

...its television but not as you know it Jim
The closest you'll get that I know of is the 2D equivilent virtua girl.
Where you can download animated virtual girls who strip on your desktop on demand or at vary intervals.
But that means you would be in several places at once... wouldn't that be a little disorienting
Yes you would in effect be in several places at once.
I would have thought it could be disorientating when you get students in two locations wanting to ask questions at the same time.
You would have to have some way of each group at least hearing the questions posed by the other, if not actually visualising the other lectures.
I was at an ILT conference and someone mentioned that trials had been conducted in the US to use holographic projection to allow virtual lectures.

They block the babel fish and yet I see no kharma whores rushing to defend the fish - what gives ?
Seriously though what did that researcher expect...Censorware blocks sites that allow anynmous surfing. Its unfair but surely not much of a surprise.
Hey we'll allow anonymous surfing and let the scropt kiddies get their daily dose of porn at uni.... Censorware obviously thought otherwise
The bit that foxed me though...why block the fish ? Did they think people would use it to find porn on foreign webpages ?
I bet he read it on the register
/. hence why all the Kharma Whores go there.
and pinched this article.
Whilst The Register probably found it on a newsgroup, they usually have the IT stories before
I like your idea for naming the P5 the P-P-P-P- Pentium.
It could go "P-P-P-Pick up a Pentium" and feature five dancing pengiums (a la Penguin buscuits) to replace the blue men adverts.
Why not go the whole hog and call the P5 the Penguin, then you could "P-P-P-P pick up a Penguin".
All the newbies would start to think Intel=Penguin=Linux.
One question...
Where can I find one of these thrid-world sewers
Nah use the Starfire Interface, it's still ahead of its time and would give users a simpler interface.

You got me there...
I'd be first in line to piss someone off, and the first to get voted out.
Read this previous article on /. about the Sealand data haven.
They have their own laws and hosting music on Sealand will undoubtably be cheaper than paying off the record labels
The big question is would they be prepared to do it ?
Now chaps if you lived in a true democracy this would never have happened.

Combat is, no conest, the greatest game of all time
Whilst Combat is undeniably THE original game in its genre I would argue that Worms is a worthy sucessor to Combat.
You never got to use killer grannies, holy hand grenades and exploding sheep as weapons when playing combat.
You may need him more, but I'm just damn jealous you've got him in the first place.

You must have seen that Java applet and Java script that runs an ASCII version of the whole Star Wars films.
Episode IV can be found here
The Death of Jar Jar can be found here (Very popular I imagine)
It would be great for Lucas to endore it, if only for it to gain a wider audience. It really is a work of art in itself.
I know its not strictly a parody, more someones warped sense of humour, but it made me laugh.
