It would take ~2 seconds for data to earth and ~2 second to get instructions to orbit. So lagtime would be 2-5 seconds, no matter bandwith, so it would be impossible to control the robot from earth as smallest mistake might take you from estimated course. We assume that information is transferred at the speed of light. Of course it could be done with heavy precalculated courses, but then VR would be useless. Bandwith increases amount of information transferred, but it still has to travel to destination.
Do you wish to pay with your reputation of others entertainment. CrimeNet is propably mostly entertaining, but how about privacy... the article noted that people on CrimeNets 'blacklist' had had a hard time getting jobs etc.
I admit that the ciminals must be punished but not with eternal mark on their foreheads.
at least in finnish textbooks (and in some swedish too) you can find all those how-to's of building bombs and stuff like thermite, or napalm, today. (ok everyone can do napalm from gasoline and soap) And most of these things could be found from finnish boy scouts manual 1988, so why bother with internet.
The main reason why non nato countries do not have GPS capacibilities at all is that you can chance the coding, making it impossible to non US forces (read NATO forces on general) read the signal.. or you can change the coding, making offset of 100 miles, or revise whole map for GPS recievers of certain coding.
And the GPS system control codes are in the hands of US. So in the times of war only US, and aligned forces may trust in GPS systems.
Then again why was gps offset chanced in persian gulf. Saddams forces had a lot of US army gear, becouse it was the US gov. to promote the junta in the first place. There was no offset in Persian gulf, for the readjusted recievers.
So where do you need the jammer anyhow, if you can ban GPS users at your whim.
Whoa, I think many of us (here, no offense) would be Virus gurus here if there would not be Open Source Community avable to "waste" our scources. When it comes to Virus coding, its done to harm others (ok ok, sometimes to learn too). It seems to be against ethics of open source to harm those wo help you.
Banks is one of the greatest scifi fictionalists of our age, and those of you who like banks, or wnat to try something bizarre should see how banks writings work on cyberpunk/gibsonisque atmosphere (or cryptosphere) Feersum Endjing being one of his most finest books. It plays in the field of cybegenetics and human mind algorithms, havin pretty feary ideas like hiding virus into psyche. Its pretty clever and I shoud say its the best banks i've read. It has somehow accuired a similar feeling than Dune byt mixed it in the world where everything from the walls to the animals belongs to the cryptosphere (matrix/afterlife) slowly dying in the warmht of last flames of encroaching sun.
It a book of a journey. and the ending is fearsome.

That was a spoiler. For those who have purchased the book without realizing its a CULTURE BOOK. The realizition of culture involvement (come on this has to be a culture novel... come on..) before the accident was truly wonderfull. And when the gizmo appeared, it was right in time to finally concieve myself of the book being a culture book.
I read book prewiews only after reading the book, but if someone does it other ways around i'd like to see spoiler tags on comments like this one. Sorry,)
Yes, the chips were one way only. At least so the article said. Then again university of Umeå (in sweden, hope thats the spelling)had a research on other way chips, couple years ago. I cant swear that this knowledge is keen, but a document about the research said that they were testing those "neural transistors" on handicapped people and were having some broblems on power conrol, (it is nice to shake hands with a pneumatic hand that knows only to commands 0=open 1=closed).
If Linux ever wishes to challenge "dominant species" of the field it needs simple GUI for end users. This doesnt have to mean that all you powerusers have to give off your hot rod custom enviroments. The key isnt in beauty, its the end users. If we wish to make them see how exellent Linux is we need to bring it to them. But then again do ou wish to give away your treasure. Main reason I use Linux is that it is convenient and efficient (and it has gimp,)). I would like to see end users think this way too. Why. When operating systems equip us with more processing power we can do more with our old machines.
Then again Opensource is more easy to upkeep, maintain and to adapt.
As mentioned many times before, Easy-To-Use-Interface doesnt have to take away your customizability, it needs to hide it. Enduser/Poweruser modes for ex.
Repairing movie == recut (directors cut, final cut, myGNUCut etc.) Repairing music == Resample. sorry, i could not resist it.

god created man in his image, so iteration 2 (man) creates its own image. We need lots of more horsepower fot iteration 3.

what could help us more than a bot that analyzes the needs of slashdot users and moderates messages you would like up for you.
of course this would stop any new ideas getting to your closed circle of ppl.
wonder if that happens now?
