I'm Canadian and I agree that the examples are absolutely appropriate. I can relate to them and understand the point that the original poster is making. Some principles are indeed, universal.
Being blind to the obvious applicability of the examples has nothing to do with "Canadian identity hypersensitivity", some people just don't get it.
