  1. Google WAY better than Deja - even w/o archive! on Deja, Google, Open Source, Oh My · · Score: 5

Personally, I think Deja dropped the ball when they "improved" the site to include all the ads and such. I think the google interface, even though it's more limited, is light years ahead of where Deja was going in the last few years. Deja was soooo slow .. it went from like 2-3 seconds per page to like 20-25 seconds per page a few years back (when the ads came in with the new interface). Now with Google, it's lightning fast. Since google has taken over, I guess that I have benefitted from the improvement in speed that Google has to offer that in my mind makes the service much more valuable. I especially like the ability to view multiple responses simultaneously and the highlighting is much better. I can't say enough good stuff about the google interface, and as far as what's missing from Deja .. the _only_ thing I miss is posting .. Even the older articles I used less frequently and am willing to sacrifice in the name of the tremendous speed!

I use groups.google.com at least 10 times every day .. it's a major part of my very existence.

Dave, First off .. it's great to see you! It's been years since. I read your stuff all the time back in the Amiga3000 days. I'd like to second what you're saying. Since the early days of Linux I've ported audio apps from IRIX to Linux, and it's click and pop city with the best of cards, CPU, etc. Linux audio sucks! So do you believe that this kernel mod has a chance to improve some of the (current) Linux audio problems? I had always blamed Hannu (sorry Hannu .. but I've cursed your name more than the average programmer's -- for the love of god! And then the licensing thing .. puh-leeze). -- - Aaron

The bit about not support multiprocessors is unfortunate. Things like Performer(tm) on Linux need something to replace the react(tm) library from SGI in order to get real-time pipelined multiprocessor performance (able to get 2-3x performance improvement by using 3 or more typically 4 CPU's). One processor for game-logic code, one for culling, one for sending graphics to the graphics hardware, and one for OS tasks. Even before Doom shipped, SGI and some talented folks there (Craig Phillips, Sharon Rose Fischler/Clay, John Rholf, Steve Fuhrman, and others) had these very hard yet classical problems solved in a UNIX environment. Including the real-time extensions. Performer handled the task of getting pipelined maximum performance out of the million-dollar SGI Onyx RE-II when it shipped. Now, Nvidia has cards more powerful than the Onyx RE-II, but SGI's Performer for Linux doesn't yet have real-time support. Anybody from SGI care to comment?

Not that I'm bitching. I'm very happy about the news. It's definitely a major milestone in the development of the kernel that has been a long time in coming.

I would just like to see the multi-processor support too!
