  1. Re:Its the width on Dual Athlon Preview: Linux Kernel Compile Smokes · · Score: 1
Well, we do use heatsink/fan combo that is about an inch thick altogether The fan blows to the side. But I don't know if it can handle 1.2 GHz, though.

But we also have a passive heatsink that IS rated at 1.2 GHz, and you can have a special fan that blows through from the side.

So there definitely are ways to fit it into 1U. Of course, whether my boss decides to use this motherboard in 1U systems or not is up to him.

Heh... Yeah, the first thing I noticed when I saw this board(in person, not the picture. I work for ASL, and saw this board last week when my boss was testing it.) was the power connector. Basically, this is a very rough draft of the motherboard from Tyan, and our company works closely with Tyan on their board development. So hopefully they'll change the locations of the connectors for the final release.

The reclining dimm slots are there because the DDR memory for this motherboard is fairly tall, and Tyan would like to be able to use this motherboard on 1U rack systems. The reclining dimm slots does waste a lot of real estate, which could've been used to place the power connector closer to the edge. But the market for 1U rack mount systems appears to be growing rapidly, so I think the reclining dimm slot is very important.

For those of you that are complaining that they just bought a system or is looking to buy a system, this board isn't even supposed to be announced until March, so don't hold your breath.

  3. It installed fine last time I tried it... on Most Linux Distros Won't Run on Pentium 4 · · Score: 2

I installed Mandrake 7.1 on a 1Ghz P4 back in August or so. Installation worked fine, as well as everything else. The only thing I've noticed was how linux_logo package that comes with Mandrake couldn't figure out what cpu we were running. When the machine first boots, it'll say that I'm running a P3, and then when I login and logout, it'll say I'm running Athlon. It couldn't get the cpu clock right either. One login, it would say 700Mhz, 300Mhz on the next login. Amused me for about 20 seconds and then I moved on.

  4. Re:Here's the deal on Laptop Exams? · · Score: 1

Most CS classes in UC Berkeley make the exam open-book(ANY book), and some, open laptop. But there still are MANY people that fail the exams. Why? The exams test you on understanding the concepts and whys, not whats and wheres that you can just copy off of a book. So even if you had all the data at your fingertips, you won't be able to finish the test if you are too busy *studying* the material during the exam. If you don't already understand the major concepts, you pretty much won't have a chance. And the professors write new questions every semester, so finding old midterms on the web won't be of any help. And if you setup an appointment with someone before the exam, so you can chat with the person during the exam for the answers, sure, you'll pass the exam that time. It'll just make it harder for you to pass it next time, and you can't rely on your big bro forever. So when it's well-executed, this sort of thing leaves no room for cheating.

  5. It was all for fun! on X-Files FPS Episode · · Score: 1

Yeah, the technology and storylines were all pretty sub-par, but I loved the little moments when Mulder was totally involved with the game: especially with those sunglasses. And Scully! Who wouldn't want a screen capture of her in the gear as the wall paper? She just looked so cool and out of character! I loved it! Better than the episode where virtual-Scully did martial arts.
