  1. One better (Was: My Email --- Send yours yet?) on Rep. Boucher Outlines 'Fair Use' Fight · · Score: 1

Email is definitely the way to go. Fax is second best; physical mail gets tied up in decontamination procedures.

I'm going to model my email on yours, and I'll go one step further. I'll email my own representative and senators, pointing out that I would like them to support Boucher on this, and that I'll be watching for results.

BTW, the Senate has a nice site for finding contact info on your senators, and the House has an online email form.

  2. Opt out? on Trade in your Junk Mail for Spam · · Score: 1

The article doesn't say how to opt out. It says that the recipients can choose which companies' mail they'll accept.

Could you sign up for spam delivery and not accept from any company? That would be a useful govt. service.

  3. Re:Multiple transfers on Music Industry Staggers While Film Industry Blooms · · Score: 1

I don't install distros from partial .iso files, either. I didn't realize that movies weren't available for ftp.

FWIW, I did watch JP in "installments" with my son when he was young. I thought he'd enjoy the dinosaurs, but I was concerned he'd be frightened if I let him immerse in the movie. 15-20 minutes, tops, and wait till tomorrow for more.

So it's not inconceivable that people might watch movies in sections. All the DVDs we own have menus to let us start the movie in some particular section. Like the CD which the artist built from songs, the movie was built from scenes. All it would take is for scenes to be broken out into individual files, and players to recognize and work with the scene sized files.

I've used ftp's reget command to get my .iso fix in the past. Why wouldn't that work for those 700 meg movies?

Heck, most M$ products are better than nothing.

  6. Re:This exploit brought to you by the letters ISS on Apache Worm in the Wild · · Score: 1
When is the security end-user community going to come together and fight this as a united front? Make the repurcussions for releasing exploit code so financially devastating, that companies will tremble in fear of releasing -anything- without following proper disclosure [vulnwatch.org].
Perhaps litigation and financial awards would be a good start.

Well, in the US of A they're working on accepting 0 (as in zero) responsibility
for flaws in their products as a matter of law. Check these resources online
    for info about the UCITA.

One interesting provision, as described on the CPSR page and related to your ideas which I quoted, is:

UCITA allows software publishers to sell their products "as is" and to disclaim liability for product shortcomings.

One other interesting aspect of this abomination is the right of the vendor to
change the terms of the license, at any time, before or after
    the original transaction.

This battle is fought state by state, in the state legislatures. Somebody in your
state capital needs to know if you don't like what UCITA means for you.
  7. Re:Mail our senator on CBDTPA == TCPA Enablement Act? · · Score: 1

No, don't write a letter. By the time the charred remains of your "de-anthraxed" letters arrive at your senators' or rep's offices, it will be too late.

Everything going to their offices is fried with xrays, microwaves, uber-secret virus killing death rays, and so on. That takes time and actually chars some of the material that finally gets through.

Check for your senators' electronic contact info here.
Get a fax number if there is no email or web form to use.

Write to your House represenatative here.

There are no sites more deserving of a slashdot effect than those two, especially at a time like this.

P.S. While you're at it, write intelligently against things like CBDTPA, outrageous "copyright protection" schemes, etc. Learn more about the issues at EFF.

Perhaps it's hard to find investors for such an illegal business activity in the Netherlands?

  9. Re:Help with Slack on Slackware 8.1 is Released · · Score: 2, Informative

Well, you could write to the info mail account at
slackware.com and ask. The change log for the
current (which became 8.1) often cited individuals
who reported specific issues during beta test and
    release candidate testing.

Besides that, according to the FAQ:

The most obvious way you can help with Slackware is to use it! The
more people that use it, the more people that can find and report
bugs. This will make Slackware even more stable than it is
now. Another obvious way is to purchase a CD set. This helps to
support everyone working on Slackware, and allows us to work on new
versions. You can also email us and tell us what programs need to be
    added.

You can also jump on the forum and answer other users'
questions. Finally, you can help get the word out on Slackware. Help
advocate the distribution - especially to the potential users who are
    still looking for their distribution.
