Thanks emmett for letting us know that there are people who don't like linux (and, apparently don't read/.!). I'm moderating this story as (-1, Flamebait).
First computer was a Radio shack (TM) Tandy Color Computer-- hooked up to a tv and had 10 colors (0-9)... Learned to program in E x t e n d e d Color Basic (TM). Ah, those were the days, not like the superfangled *monitors* and *internal* floppy drives you kids have now! We didn't overclock!! We didn't need it!
That might hold up for true public forums like Usenet, but Slashdot makes the EXPLICIT statement on every page that "Comments are owned by the poster" That precludes Slashdot from being a true "public forum" by maintianing that comments are not public domain but remain the sole and private property of the poster.
Katz, you're backpeddling because you're feeling the heat of potential lawsuits and are now trying to play Mr. Richeous for PR purposes.
You mailed me for permission to use some of my comments (posted as my logged in screen name). So just to be an asshole, and to question your intentions (because I don't believe what you're saying now), I'm going to do like I did with the US Census and fail to reply. Not a yes. Not a no. Just deafening silence. We'll see what you do and where all that journalistic integrity talk really stands.
The test: Will you publish/. comments without explicit permission? We shall see.
Oops did I just publish your comment without explicit permission? Sorry about that one--I guess if you don't speak up for your rights, you'll lose them.
www.imesh.com www.hotlinehq.com there are plenty of ways to trade all kinds of files. this means: -stopping napster (and its users, if dre is willing to go that far) won't do anything -music/files will ALWAYS be traded for free-- encryptions will be broken, people will always go for the free stuff if they can avoid paying as you say, mp3 is now effectively ineradicable Sony just introduced a new method of distribution for music on the internet.. it doesn't say it in that article, but in Billboard magazine they quoted a price of about $2.95 per song, to be distributed in conjunction with CD Now. Who in their right mind would pay three bucks for a song they can get free? The internet is changing all kinds of media, and the only thing we know for certain about where it's going is that record companies are being FORCED to stop overcharging for music, copyrights or not.
definitely. look at the music clubs who sell 12 cds for a penny (introductory of course.. actual money they get probably comes to about 3,4 bucks a cd).. they still make a profit, even with all those people who use more than one name and steal cds. if cds were cheaper (even 5 bucks), and most money went to artists, people would buy cds and artists would be plenty funded. Where does that extra seven bucks go, you say? Well, record companies, yes, but the majority goes into promotions. So if we can't spend it on promotions, how can we promote the band? GIVE AWAY FREE MP3S ON NAPSTER! IT COSTS NOTHING!
Somebody better get their ass up there and teach Santa to swim fast! I don't know how long all those reindeer can stay afloat, either...
