Napster, as of the beginning of this week, is port-blocked at Arizona State. Thankfully, I've been FTPing long before Napster, and will now continue as usual. People who are doing "research" and "academic" things on the internet use less than 10k/s per person. My dorm is fed by multiple T1 connections. If they're there and paid for, why can't we use it? I hear citations of bandwidth percentage used by napster. Ok, the numbers are impressive. Percentages can be misleading, however. What are the actual kb/sec numbers? When napster is disabled, is the network/internet gateway saturated? I highly doubt it. If everyone in my dorm simultaneously did "research", reading primarilly text-based pages, I don't think we could fill a single T1 worth of bandwidth. What about the early hours of the morning? Are the lines not paid for then? You think people do "research" at 3am? Bullshit. Give me the access I came for. If this University didn't offer a high-speed connection in my dorm I would not have come here. Cap Napster, if you must, from 6AM to 11PM. The rest of the time, open it up. Otherwise, yet another resource of this fine university is going to waste. -j3
