If my ISP followed any such behavior they'd be out of business in a heartbeat. Their service is bad enough, and it's a miracle they are even around today! Internet users are becoming more and more informed, and if this were to fall through, Excite@Home would be Excite@Homeless!
1. Governments could ban access to certian subnets pretty easily - just treatening major backbone providers (and anyone else with lines running out of the country) to block the IPs would bring about a ban quite quickly. The upstream providers of HavenCo could also be attacked or otherwise forced to discontinue service.
2. There is also the little issue of security. I've got no doubts that HavenCo is confident in their own security (and it sounds like they've got quite the gun towers), but honestly, it isn't hard to surround and seige an island. Not only are they out of government juristiction, but they are out of government protection. Anyone with a boat and a strong will could take the place over and they'd be out in the cold because there are no police or airforce or anybody except themselves when it comes to protection!
3. Finally, there is the little detail of the people responsible for the content on HavenCos servers. A sniffer could easily log the IPs of incoming IPs then, they could be hunted down. In fact, the systems wouldn't really need to be cracked in a hostile manner. The government could hire a free agent to get an account, then put up a sniffer after cracking a few accounts.
There is always DDoS too! I guess there is also the minor risk of nuclear bombing, but I doubt they'd really need to worry about it.
Not an end to ecommerce, end to sloppy design.

I would hope that Boo does not drag other e-commerce sites down with it. The collapse of Boo does not prove that e-commerce doesn't work. It proves that overly fancy design doesn't work.
I wouldn't shop there!

I think one reason they have failed, is that the design of the site, while artsy, it's a little hard to work with. I personally despise multiple windows while navigating a site, and some of the features (try on???) are whack. I think they came out of 'feel good' type of decisions ("Ooh, our customers can actually try on this stuff!").
A web company is only as good (successful) as it's site, and if its a bear to navigate and shop, why would anyone purchase anything!!?!?
I'm suprised Micros**t isn't doing well in the legal battle field. While I am happy they are losing, I always thought that it's possible to weasel your way though any court battle as long as you have a good enough (e.i. expensive) lawyer. Microsoft has a team of lawyers, they are more famous than OJ Simpson (Bill Gates is anyway; richer too!), yet, they are not winning, or even doing decent!
I guess that murder and a violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act are two different scenarios, but still!
We can collect bounties for busting dweebs (a.k.a. internet scum).
It's nice to see the government is trying to take action against SPAM by empowering the citizens!
Now I've got something useful I can spend my time on, and make $ too!
Interesting how the tactics of yesteryear (do bounty hunters still exist?) being implemented into the new fronteer.
Do I sense a major reduction in SPAM, an increase in initiatives to bring these non-31337 losers behind bars, and more youngsters (and old timerz) having more time & $ to spend in bars?
This is going to work wonders for Micros**t. Combined with Oracle positioning itself into the 'next microsoft' (over here if your don't believe me), I'm convinced Microsoft is finally pushing themselves to their own demise! Keep up the great work you idiots. The sooner Microsoft's dominance is reduced, the sooner superior software will be an asset and poor software will be worth the equivalent to cow dung!
If this 'abandonware' became super successful (hint go and download it and use it if you can), they would definitally notice and hopefully/maybe would open source and freely distribute their better products (i.e. the best HTML editor on the planet and a kickass app. server among other things)! Do your part and make them think this is worth their while!
Develop a bot that accepts a search query, or from a selected list of thousands (millions?) of products already listed and categorized (another AI project all in it's own!).
From there, this product will be searched for at shopping sites, online auction houses, or anywhere this product is found for sale.
This info must be kept up to date (updated once a day?), and not an affiliate service (not paid for listing), and is a 3rd party service to bargan shoppers.
There are sites that exist, but most SUCK! computershopper.com - prime example.
Using computershopper.com as an example though, a wizard which could help a shopper look for what they want based on their uses would be another very useful feature.
Also this could be expanded to items other than computer hardware/software. clothes, cars, etc.
Let's examine a ficticious scenario here for a second. You have fame, you have money, you have one small problem. A movie/song/sex video you put blood, sweat and tears into making is being distributed freely to anyone that has the time to get it. What would I do? Hire a sh*tload of people to stop it. DoS, fingering & prosecuting perpetrators, and anything else it takes. I must admit, I love free music, but there is no such thing as a free lunch.
I say again, this is a violation of copyright law, it's being violated, and Metallica is the only group with enough balls to do anything about it. Yes they are being protective, and yes it's their personal right to put an end to stopping copyright infringement. Personally, I don't like Napster, so I really don't care, Gnutella is THE way to go, and it's very difficult to stop or trace!

nice touch!
I found some spiffy looking wireless lan products for those that don't need the longer distances.

slightly offtopic, but still kind of on the mark.

Well, not quite, but I'm in disbelief that the legal teams of these huge corporations aren't winning the battles they are fighting!
What is this world coming to when the people (small timers at least) come before the almighty dollar!
I'm shocked, this is finally Apacolypse Now!
Well, it seems to me that the performance gain of a multi-processor system is greater with a mac than an x86 setup.
What a suprise!
A security hole a week!?!?
