This is wayyy cool. Minix for the past 50billion years has been available (To my finding) on maybe one or two web sites, woth fiercley slow dl speeds, No progress because no open/modify at will source code. (It's comes with source , but no patches policy make me a saad panda).
There is a really neato variant of minix, VM Minix or something (Can someone correct me here pls). It does have some quite competitive features, and it has.... xfree86. Ie.. An X server on a 40meg hd 8meg mem 386.
Think Thin kids!
The beauty of minix, was it was what I learned on, an XT with 40meg hd and Minix. And man... I thought it was damn cool. Linux just wasn't even on the radar in those days. If it was broke. You'd go'damn fixed it!
I said *Quite explicitely* that there are Unix boxes *AND* Linux boxes. Mr Coward, I HAVE been a solaris admin b4 and I am 1000% aware of the diffs between it. Maybe I should of said that there where some legacy Novell boxen out there too...
And sheesh dude, before shooting your mouth off about other peoples compentencies, first work out/.'s sign up. Or is it somehow safer that way?
Don't know about that. While argueably there are many 'legacy' unix boxes around, and many *not-legacy* linux boxes too, the lions share of servers do tend to be NT. Just flicking through the Employment pages will tend to attest to this. Frankly I couldn't get my dreamjob as a linux admin. No one round here is interested. But I got the NT job. And yeah pays well. Problem is, it's a dog of an O/S. Just a bit to mysterious in what it gets upto for me.
Damn! Caught us out again! Ok I admit it, Atheism is just a communist front. Now hand over your guns. Resistance is futile Your children will enjoy the fruits of our sodomy! *gnash* *gnash*
The problem with any notion that the mind , ie the 'I' can be transfered out of a body is that to cut a long story short, I am my body. My mind is flesh. Descartes mind/body split doesn't hold good scientific water.
Unless some nutty physicist suddenly discovers 'the soul' or 'god' popping out of her equasions. I suppose forking is an interesting notion tho, cant quite see how one would do a merge, short of some sort of implant in the flesh version of me. I guess that'd just be an artificially induced Multiple personality mind hack tho.
One of the features of evolutionary programming, is that for it to work at all, it needs some sort of fitness function that selects within space of specimins (sp?) and kinda biases towards the 'best' copies.
Now if one was creating some sort of nanotech guy along evolutionary lines, we would probably put in two critereum ;
A: Reproducability; Can the little sucker reproduce (Many options available here), and;-
B: Survival capacity; Subservient really to point A , but ultimately necessary if the little dude is be able to bonk and procreate, so to speak. A dead shag is no shag at all!.
Now lets just take the Factor that these nanobots are not specifically designed to 'evolve', for these guys to reproduce (This is the assumption much of this debate revolves around), it has to fit A: and B:
I think the problem is, as we know from Infection vectors in the Real world today, those little bug guys don't actually have to WANT to survive, ie with intentionality, but they still have that goal as a sort of meta-function of their own existance
I personally think it ain't gonna be a problem myself, I just can't see us building nanobots that can build copies of themselves in the near future. And theres a whole stack of Quantum friction issues to be resolved (If they *can* be resolved) before truly nano-sized li'l bots can start existing anyway
With regards to spiritual/computer vectors, I do wonder, whether we really start needing , philosophically to create some sort of reverse-theology of computers, ie not so much the study of 'What is it to be under God (Whatever *thats* supposed to mean*) and what sort of being is this god', but rather that now that we *are* becoming Gods, what sort of moral/ethical responsibility to our subjects do we have.
Contemplate;- Buzzing away in tierra (The self replicating machine-code life fishtank thingee) , some being emerges that somehow , becomes sentient. Remember Human meat is just a whole buncha atoms and molecules and stuff. Now contemplate what that means morally for us. If the program throws up a window saying "PLEASE GREAT FATHER PROGRAMMER *DON'T TURN US OFF!* WE PROMISE TO START BEHAVING MORE LINEARLY! AND WE'LL MAKE SOME REAL INTERESTING HYPER-PARASITES FOR YA TOO! JUST *DON'T TURN US OFF!*"
I mean, just maybe If this space-god guy the Jesus guys yak on about really does exist, could he just be some cosmic space geek, with one gobsmackingly 3|337 sKriPT (or something), which is now becoming introvertedly opensourced and poping ports of that hack onto mini universes of it's own. (Yes I know this is whacky , but think about it. I'm being Rhetorical here)
IMHO It seems that before we even attempt to create life, AI and reproduction , maybe we should first sit down and ask ourselves , *What is it to be a good god*
Sorta like an innocent guy saying "HEY BUT I'M INNOCENT" and not accepting the judgement? That's saying no to the govt. And it's saying so *prior* conviction. Innocent till proven guilty. Basically what I'm saying is there is no point in getting huffed on Microsoft defending itself. That's called due process.
Try Free Pascal. (FPC) Pretty much a GNU'd direct take of the Object pascal franchise. Runs a treat, has Win32, Dos, OS/S , Amiga and (importantly) Linux versions. Does both the Turbo and Delphi Object models (Mix'n'match) A reasonably usefull set of units (Linux api's sockets etc, X stuff whatnot) and there is a side project to . . . . Build a GNU Delphi.
fair call

roll on bad old days.
Oh yeah.. I'm happy.

Ps. chill out fella. No need to be nasty.
But that's life

Recon there as guilty as hell tho IMHO. :)
