The goal is to write the code to create a given output in as small a file size as possible, but it gives you a defined goal to achieve without being too much like the "Hello World" programs you find in every programming book and tutorial on the planet. Some of them are pretty easy, some of them i just stare at and wonder how on earth I'd ever complete them. A lot of them (maybe all of them?) are more about creativity than knowing obscure functions in a given language.
