The kernel dosen't have to be changed in order to add functionality to Linux. Why would anyone recode the kernel when they could just write a module. And modules can be loaded or not loaded as specified by the user. BTW Linux is here to stay. The only way it will fade is if we let it and I just don't see that happening. I've coded for Mac and Windows it sucks! I'd rather code Open Source any day.
