nah - to be nitpicking - they (FMC) bought a (car-) company that already had developed a power-split-hybrid (admittedly in the concept phase) and moved the technology (based upon aisin aw (produces e.g. transmissions) planetary gearbox).
What they did do was to industrialise that solution.
