I do have to say, I really enjoyed reading your project(back a few months ago, someone linked it off of/. in the comments.)
I was seriously considering setting up something like that, but I still have to wonder how safe it really would be. It seems as if it would not too major of a concern,(note that this would have been in my bedroom, however) but I don't know that I would want microwave radiation there all the time. Anyways, though, money ran out, and - long story short, I didn't build them(probably better that way, considering the dificulty of them-- I'd probably still be working on them.)
Kudos for the cool write-up on them, though. Maybe someday I'll get that going, just for the fun of it.
After reading numerous posts, I think I know what we really need to get rid of the phone spam... Procmail. (well, something similar to that, anyways) SMS message comes in that has something from the wrong folks... >/dev/null.
Hmm.. if it were going through enough hurdle and such, it might even work for getting rid of other stuff...
Okay, minds working a little bit better now... (love that coffee)
Anyways, how about this thought: SMS messages with some sort of accountability(as suggested by someone else) --however, allow annonymous ones as well(therefore keeping some level of backwards compatibility.) Then, if you don't want to recieve annonymous ones, dump them to an e-mail account automatically. Same thing with Spam and such... Hmm.. anyways, just a few thoughts:)
You might be able to get the drive adn such in there, but then the speaker level outputs would have to go. There's no way that you could fit the amplifier and a drive in a single head-unit. Also, having a hard drive in there would be pretty dangerous... Love those Michigan potholes:) There's no faster way to kill a hd than bump it while it is running. Also, you may be able to fit a fan in there, but with most cars, anyways, there is next to no room behind the head-unit, so air circulation is still essentially null.
They're both more or less the same, and that's where the name comes from. I -believe- that the Greek version is Cerberus, and the Roman was Kerberos, although I could be wrong. I have also heard that Kerberos is how "Cerberus" should be pronounced (Kur-bear-ous)
Wow... It's vacant in here... looks like this hasn't even made it to the front page yet. (resisting urge to shout first post crap)
I would think that setting up a storage box really wouldn't be that bad, cause remember, you're really only going to need to run NFS and/or SMB on it. I would think that as long as you could get decent I/O performance out if it, it shouldn't be a problem(since you're probably only goign to be running the network at 10 or 100 base T anyways (10baseT, you'll get a little over a meg/second, at 100baseT, you really need fast drives to keep up with the network.)
Wow! I had forgotten all of that stuff about AMG... Cool... BUT, I have to say, I think Ghost in the Shell really has a lot of geek potential... I jsut watched it again a few weeks ago, and literally, the geeks in the group(well, one was drunk, but otherwise:) sat there when it got done and said"Whoa" (in a good Matrixesque/Bill and Ted kind of way)
GITS really brings up some interesting points, especially considering some of the recent things that have been going on.. Just a few months ago, researchers managed to get a visual image through a cat's eyes, and now, it seem that they are real close ot getting an image from a camera into a brain as well... Pretty scary, cause it really suggests that more computer/brain interfaces are coming, and then from there.... well... lines start to get blurry, I guess. I'd give it another 20 years or so, and I think we'll have that question... probably sooner.
(I still want that retinal based X-server and a fast wireless connection in my head, though:)
I ran that on a Renegade BBS in Detroit... must have been '95 or '96... that was a cool game... now we just need a few others, like GWARS and BRE/SRE/Falcon's Eye

Hmm... that is a very interesting idea. I would have to wonder how well a movie would fit on a CD, but perhaps MPEG-4 could do that. 640 mb is even a fairly reasonable download... Not great, but could be done.
And if it were to catch on with independent studios, that could be really cool. I especially like the idea of releasing an old movie with an up-to-date soundtrack and such... that could really be cool.
Very interesting idea, I would love to see what could be done with that... With the relatively low cost of CD-R's, it would even be pretty reasonable. I do have to wonder how well something like that could take off against DVD, but if it could... That would be great....
No...the K7 will use its own interface, named slot A. This is not rumor, it is fact. AMD has been demonstrating some alpha K7s for a while now. Slot A has the same dimensions as slot 1, this was done to make it easier for motherboard manufacturers making slot 1 boards to transition to slot A boards. But slot A is not slot 1, or slot 2. It uses the Alpha's EV-6 bus. By the way, although the 21164 Alpha is a socket based chip, the 21264 uses the exact same slot A interface as the K7. Off topic, I know, but uhh... does this mean that if I were to have say, a K7, and decide I wanted something else, that I could just yank out the CPU and drop in an Alpha? Ohh baby.. that'd be sweet... K7 looks to be a pretty cool cip, I think... And if it is similar to an Alpha, well, I have that much more repsect for it. Ok, enough babbling from me. Darmox
That's the thing, though. A company THAT vast really doesn't need a leg to stand on. They've got money. They just keep filing suits/motions, whatever. The other employees/stockholders are happy cause the lawyers are finally doing something, instead of just sitting around, and no one person could keep up with them. They can just keep putting off the trial, which leaves whichever website it is in question offline. People stop coming to it, pretty soon, it's gone...The Evil Empire could run trials indefinitely. No one could keep up with that.
>I strongly suspect an odd April Fool's gag. But if it isn't and if MicroWhack is behind it, NT is OUTA HERE! > They'll just have to find some other package to run the plant.:) > Hehee... Yup, if it isn't a gag, my computer becomes 100% M$ free a lot sooner than expected(well, expected is with release of Q3 for linux:) And then we'd have to look into some of the rioting they had in the previous story:) Strangly enough, last night, before I read the rioting article, I was dreaming about rioting at M$... Burning CD's and EULA's and stuff... Throwing all my old dos floppies on the fire... Okay, back now... Must...restrrrain.... self.
Actually, it did happen on March 31st, at lesat where I am... Not too long before midnight, but still before... UF is in Canada--I think in Alberta, so that would be Central Time Zone. It was around 11 EDT when I noticed that UF was down.... I don't know... I hope it's a april fools joke, but it seems pretty realistic, with all the news on the UF site and stuff... Let me just put it this way: I wouldn't be surprised.
It works running with a remote X server. I just did it a little while ago... I must admit, it is very nice... BIG time bandwidth hog, though... got to watch the hub(on 10baseT, going through the school's entire network) go up to about85% or more everytime I moved the mouse...Still pretty cool though... I had it running the X server on an Ultrasparc 10, with VMWare running on my Pentium 200 MMX. The performance was not great, but some of that was from my end up the system. I need to do some optimizing for it, I think... Still very interesting, though, very interesting. I think I just have to say, I like it. I like it a lot. A very nice program, fun to play with, and it keeps me from rebooting sometimes too. Darmox
Holy Wah! The post's been up there for about 10 minutes and the place is slashdotted already... I can't even get teh main page... Anyone know of any other sources for it?
funny, I went to see the Star Wars trailer last night, and stuck around to see Wing Command:) It was about the same with the people cheering and stuff... I was very impressed by the trailer... VERY cool. As for Wing Commander.... Well, it had more plot holes...
Just to add another brief thought to that: Not only do they make that money on the app, but remember, for the majority of users, they have already sold them a copy of Win 9x with the computer, whether the person uses it anymore or not. For most folks buying a system, they're paying for windows anyways. Just a thought. Darmox
I had a bit of a thought about this... Say you are running the Linux version. That'll be one process, right? Under that you run NT or 95... Whichever, it's not important. Anyways, 95 for instance can't use multiple processors. BUT, Linux can. So, if the app is threaded, could you expect the increase in performance? Even if not, you could still have one processor for Linux and one doing 95 stuff... Anyways, looks like some really cool stuff... Just a thought on it. Darmox

I very much doubt that Slashdot would be targeted in this way. Other than the "Bill Gates of Borg" icon, I
don't recall seeing anything on Slashdot that Microsoft could complain to Rob about. Read the disclaimer at
the bottom of each Slashdot page: "All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their
respective companies. Comments are owned by the Poster. The Rest © 1997-99 Rob Malda." Whilst some
of the comments posted to Slashdot are clearly inflammatory, Rob makes it clear that, as far as he is
concerned, the buck stops with the person who made the comment, and not with him.
