Well....as to whether there's any public discussion I'm pretty doubtful, I'm in university in New Zealand at the moment, one of the supposedly last bastions of liberalism, etc in any country yet most people I talk to don't know jack about politics, assuming we all live in a land of joy abnd plenty and that corruption could never happen here, after all that sort of stuff only happens in other countries, right?
NZ's currently run by a pretty hypocritical left-wing government at the moment, the only party I can think of that would be against this sort of intrusion is ACT, a small liberalist party. Like jameslore said public discussion revolves around rugby, not a lot else matters in Rangi Sixpack's life. Now if only we had a second amendment...
