I don't have a cheapo fan on my AMDk6-2 400 chip. I have the AMD recommended fan on my chip..huge heatsink. I left the machine off for a whole day.... turned it on... Kernal panic agin. Corel Linux runs fine.... Stormix runs fine... Debian runs fine Redhat 6.0 runs fine. I just preffered Mandrake distro over the others. I don't anymore I guess... I am not sure... I will try agin soon. With a different Distro. Caldera maybe. Mandrake has more of the software that I like and x windows versions .

I have 1 128 MB pc100 dram chip in my machine. I might try mandrake 7.0 later on. Thanks Take Care

slackware is the only distro I heven't tried yet. I liked Mandrake because it seemed much faster that Red Hat.

Specifics... Here is One truth. I was testing Oxygen.. the mandrake beta of 7.0. Seemed to do well. Then about 4 days later or so AIR was released. Downloading AIR.iso. just finished the download... Then.. MANDRAKE 7.0 ISO released and available. 2 days to test the latest beta before release? Come on? There were many many Posts of incompatabilities of all kinds. Very Few post said... READY to Release! Take Care OH.. BTW... You are missing the MAIN point... I WANT mandrake to work... I WANT to eliminate WINDOWS. I don't want to have to build a whole new computer system to accomadtate it. Christopher De Long

the issue is... AMDK6 + memory OVER 64 MB.. causes instability.I have 2 machines.. both have AMD chips in them. 1 is AMDK6-2 400 Mhz with 128 MB of memory. 2 is AMDK6 233 mhz with 64 MB of Memory. When Mandrake 7.0 is installed on eaither machine it runs ok for maybe 24 hours ... with no modifications to the install. Then the system starts graphic smearing... lost symlinks to icons... programs unresponsive.... then reboot... KERNEL Panic Interpeted as NO HOPE.

Seems to me... Mandrakesoft is now just as beligerant about endusers as Microsoft is. I have posted in mandrake cooker mail list. I have posted in various Linux newsgroups/websites. So far I have 2 responses. NO responses from anybody at MandrakeSoft. So this means I can translate this to. MandrakeSoft is in it for the Money ONLY. Let people buy the OS. Let them find out that it will NOT run stable on their AMD K6/K62 Computer. Let them reinstall Windows 98. Let them put Mandrake 7.0 on the shelf to gather dust. If they question a simple issue... ignore it. DO NOT respond. THEY will GO AWAY. Well... I am not going to go away. there is not much I can do. Except REFUSE to install mandrake 7.0 on any and all machines I build and sell. I hope you enjoy the money you get from the retail sales to users who have no idea you only want their money. I really liked mandrake . Then I get this kind of response from a simple issue. I guess I will go back to where the first STABLE retail Linux began... RED HAT. That is where mandrake started from. I guess I have to join the Mandrake sucks newsgroups? No I refuse to drop that low. I would prefer a simple response, from the mandrakesoft people. It won't happen... but it would be nice. take care Christopher De Long

Mandrake 7.0 was nice to install... some confusion on the package selection... that is another issue though. I started with an oxygen install of mandrake... pre release beta... I thought to myself.. "THIS IS THE ONE!" The distro that will put a large dent in the MS dominated market. Oxygen seemd fairly stable. I was in the middle of downloading AIR..... Bam.. Mandrake 7.0 is released... So I download the mandrake 7.0 ISO. Ok... here is the problem. I installed it.. Got connected to the internet... was crusing.. thinking to myself.. "I can FINALLY Eliminate Windows !" then Bam.. KERNEL panic... everything went crazy.. video went bonkers... (is that really a word?) So I tried reinstalling.. thinking it wa ssomething I did...same thing... happened agin.. I tested my hard drive. I checked my other computer. Installed it on it.. Same thing. Everything was great then everything went to heck. after 12 tries... many hard disk tests. I gave up. I posted messages in the cooker message board. Seemed Nobody had an answer. I posted to other places. I got a response. http://www.multimania.com/poulot/k6bug.html Seems the fact I have an AMD K6 -2 400 and 128 MB of ram on my main computer and an AMD K6 233 with 64 MB of ram is the problem. My question is ... Is this truly the problem? Also.. Does mandrake 7.0-2 ISO fix this? I do have one thought that makes me cringe. Mandrake 7.0 was rushed to production so it could be released at the upcoming Linux conferences in February. Pleas say it isn't so. I downloaded mandrake thru a 56 k Modem 3 times. so don't say I haven't really tried. I also had a friend send my a CD he got thru a dsl connection. I thought maybe my versions were corrupt.
