  1. Re:It depends on the hat you're wearing on Drone Camera Tornado Coverage Raises Press Freedom Questions · · Score: 2

The difference between taking a video with a drone and posting it on youtube, and a reporter taking a video and showing in a news report is essentially zero.

True but that is also different than a couple hundred reporters/bloggers flying drones over a disaster area trying to get the story and interfering with the actual rescue effort. If drones were officially allowed every news organization would have at least one and would want to use it on a big story. We already have a similar issue with helicopters that are very expensive to use. Bring that cost way down and the use will explode.

That is the issue with commercial droned. They are very inexpensive and many companies will want to use them in the same airspace. That will cause issues and the FAA has not figured out how to deal with them yet.

  2. I can't see how $48,000 that this person probably doesn't have will prevent him from transmitting unapproved RF signals in the future.

Would you do something like that again if you had gone through the legal system and now have your wages garnisheed for $48k? I doubt it. It is also a deterrent to others who would think about doing the same thing.

By the way, nothing short of incarceration will prevent many behaviors. All we can do is deter.

  3. Demographic XYZ is more likely to be the perpetrators of crime ABC. So you're suggesting they should be prosecuted proactively because they have a higher probability to commit crime ABC?

    That would be taking it one step to far. It is much closer to the following;
    1. A behavior (in this case drinking and driving) often leads to undesirable consequences (accidents, injury and many times death in this case).
    2. This behavior is a choice. (In this case a drinking driver could not have drank, waited till sober before driving or could have had someone else drive)
    3. We make the behavior illegal.
Notice the second part? Being part of a demographic is not a choice.

  4. Either you victimize somebody, or you don't victimize anybody.

Ever heard of "closing the barn door after the horse is loose"? Sure you could prosecute a drunk driver after an accident, if he is still alive, but that does not help the people killed or property damaged in the accident. The DWI laws are there to prevent accidents.

    The outcome makes a difference.

By your logic there would be no conspiracy to commit murder charge is the person is still alive. So no more stings where a suspect puts out a contract on someone but the hit man is a cop. Same thing someone firing a rifle at someone else and missing. I guess that is not attempted murder. By the way, jamming in general is illegal in the US so even your 'outcome' argument is spurious.

FYI, there are people who are better drivers with a drink or three in them than certain other drivers who are cold sober.

There are a few people who drive poorly sober and a few people who drive well drunk so your scenario can exist but is the exception. Most sober drivers are better than most drunk drivers. DWI laws are there to deal with most drivers and not the exception. Much in the same way professional race car driver can probably drive most of the Interstates at 120mph quite safely but the limits are still much lower.

So someone who is drunk behind the wheel should not be prosecuted? They haven't hurt anyone yet. Being drunk behind the wheel is not a problem except that it increases the probability of an accident. In many cases probability counts as well. As for heat resistance, here is some anecdotal information.

There is a reason it is called anecdotal. Here are some questions. How hot was the pot? how many times did it happen? When you so it several times the polymers in the plastic break down. Over time the area will become soft, rough, and easily scratched. I live in an apartment and the previous tenants were not very careful. There is a spot right next to the stove that is starting to deteriorate. It is darkened, scratched and sucks up stains easily. That process does not happen in granite. I am not talking about burns but the chemical breakdown of the material.

Ever try to polish out a scratch in laminate? You can do the in granite and it scratched much less.

    - foam milk

Psychiatric drugs are often given freely for solving administrative problems (Ritalin or Adderall for "ADHD").

Autism and ADHD is not an "administrative problem". I have Aspergers Syndrome (a form of Autism) and I know how it feels during an episode. To put it simply my cognitive mind would recede and my lizard brain would take over. The problem with the lizard brain is that it only knows fight or flight. Too often it chooses fight. It is quite an interesting feeling when my lizard brain is yelling "MUST FIX PROBLEM NOW" while my cognitive brain is a voice in the distance saying "chill out". I found a med that actually reduced the frequency and severity of these episodes.

I lived with an autistic kid and we knew when he missed a dose. On the meds he was a quirky kid , Off his meds he was a kid who could not control himself no matter how hard he tried. He would usually apologize for his bad behaviors once he was medicated again. Please note that the medication did not make him a zombie. It just slowed things down so he could handle it.
