I have 3c509 up and running since SuSE 5.2. After I upgraded (reinstalled) to SuSE 6.0 the card was working too.

Just get CD-ROM ISO image "6.0-evaluation.iso" from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/
