I've been living in a small town, working from a home office for nine years. I grew up in a rural setting, and I've always dreamed of moving back to the country.
Our house is sold (closing 4/15) and we'll be building on thirty acres an hour drive away from most tech jobs in the area.
Since I already have a tele-commute job, I don't have to worry about that right away. But I worry about what will happen if my job goes away. Worst case, I'll commute an hour each way to a job in the big city.
But there are also alternatives, such as local consulting (most farms use PCs in managing their business now), become local ISP (rural customers have few choices, usually expensive choices), etc.
Then again, I've been in tech long enough to think that a job in one of the trades might be a good thing.:-)
You label me according to my interests and vocation ("hacker", "geek", "nerd") and you label me according to my religious beliefs.
There only labels that describe me are my name, social security number or driver's license number. Since I am unique, only a unique label can describe me.
Since you ask, I'll tell you a little about me:
I enjoy working with technology. I love hacking hardware and software. I consume large amounts of caffeinated beverages. I do not wear geek glasses repaired with scotch tape. I am an adrenaline junkie, and currently get my fix by driving my motorcycle and SUV. I want to skydive some day.
I love my family and I am committed to them. I am monagamous. They are more important to me than my vocation or hobbies.
Finally, and most important to me:
I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for me because He loved me, and there was no way I could save myself. To me, the label "Christian" means "one who follows Christ's example to the best of his ability, while relying on God's help". His command to me is to love God with all my heart, mind and soul- and to love my neighbor as I do myself. Obeying these commands is what brings me satisfaction.
So now you know more about me than you probably wanted to, but perhaps it will help you in your "profiling" of me.:-)
Every hear the song "Closet Chronicles" by Kansas? Our society values us by what we "contribute", how attractive we are... Many things which are meaningless in the end. If we live long enough to decay, if we cease to "contribute" then we are forgotten.
We all come into this world precious, priceless.
We leave it the same way. None of us has any more value, no one has any less.
I have used the fruit of Phil's labor for many years, and I am greatful for his hard work.
