scandisk does much the same job as fsck on unix. And neither of them like people using the disk whilst it is being repaired. This is quite resonable. So even under unix you would have to wait. unix has the upper hand here though because at least fsck will complain that the disk is in use before it tries to repair anything.
But lead water pipes may have been a problem for the British ! My family home was built in 1867. During some renovations in 1995 we were still removing old lead water pipes from the building , even today it is a lead pipe that gets the water into the house!
For this reason I think Linux is ultimately doomed. Maybe my hacking skills are not quite up to it but I've been trying to write a Linux version of M$ BSOD for months now and I just can't get to work. Getting the text and colour right was a snitch. But everytime I find a way to totally hang the box Linus breaks my code by fixing the kernel. Can anyone help with this ?
Well I think what you are suggesting might upset one of the best features of X. With X I can work on one machine and have windows open to applications running on other remote machines.
Many years ago I read a science fiction short story about a team of guys performing research into AI and maths and logic etc. Now the author took the premise that the human mind was some kind of computer, so when these guys finally reached the "ultimate thought" in the course of their reasearch it "crashed" their minds. They just stopped and eventually died. When the reaserch database was moved over to a new facility and another group took over the work they to began to "crash" and die as they too found this ultimate thought.
Well I read GEB in 1984 and I think it almost crashed my mind. I havn't been able to think in straightforward, decidable, non-recursive, complete way about even the simplest things ever since.
WARNING - DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, YOU MAY NEVER RECOVER.
Anyway somehow I think I have to get myself a new copy and go around the loop a few more times:)
P.S. Does anyone have a an idea of the author/title of the story above ?
I don't know about developed, it's always been that way in the UK. OK it's some time since I was at school but it was a very miserable time for me then and when I have visited my home town and spoken to current teachers in my former school it seems nothing has changed. This kind of school only exists to keep children off the streets. They have no interest in promoting anyones intelectual development. As a result the majority of pupils can only talk about football and what they have seen on TV. If someone wants to pursue something that demands a little concentration and thought they become outcasts and can have a very lonely time. Then they can start to get introverted and "wierd". If they are lucky, like myself, they have the will and stamina to survive this 5 year "prison" sentence and make it to university or such. Where they find out, with much relief, that they are not alone. That it is quite normal for human beings to want to think.
Keep GUIs away from the OS setup and config please.
I'm worried about this because I have already experienced some M$ Windows type behavior with my Redhat Linux box.
e.g. Xconfigurator removed some font directories for me. No warning, just took them out.
e.g. Kvidtune totally screwed my mode lines so that X would not start.
I could go on, but the point is these nice tools for the uninitiated seem to cause a lot of trouble.
Now you could say that my Linux tools are only beta etc. but Microsoft seems to have demonstrated, by spending a huge amount of time, money and effort on coding and testing, that it just can't be made to work. The more complicated and powerfull the sytem becomes the less likely these GUI tools are going to work. They just can't anticipate every present and future scenario. Who is going to waste their life keeping them up to date ?
I don't want to see Linux go down that road.
Yes, for simple apps. simple tasks provide a nice simple attractive interface. For the rest of the sytem forget it.
Users of these things should never have to install the operating sytem or configure it. Let it come in a Mac type box all sealed up and ready to run.
I have recently had the most amusing experience with Word. A guy at work comes to me with a document that he cannot load into his version of Word, and when he tries to load it to an older version the thing actually crashed ! So I try reading the file with StarOffice. Bingo. No problem. Sorry I don't recall the version numbers.
How on earth could anyone be granted a patent for the distribution of any form of digital information over the internet ? That is what it was built for a long time before this patent application ! This is crazy.
Testing, testing, testing....

Q. How many Open Source Software developers does it take to change a lightbulb ?
A. Maybe SIX BILLION. One to change the lightbulb and then everyone else on the planet can check if it was done it right !

Maybe I have missed a point but I don't see what Godels Theorem has to say about the existance of God or otherwise. Can you help me with this ?

M$ and others should be scared of this.
