I guess it really depends on the school. I attended a prestigious Institute of Technology for my undergrad studies, and in addition to everyone taking a quantum mechanics course, everyone had to take quite a few courses in the humanities and social sciences. It seems that a lot of people here equate engineering with black and white type thinking, but it simply is not the case. The subtleties and nuances involved in being a good engineer... well, I guess that's it right there, isn't it? A good engineer can see the subtleties but a mediocre one will see one right way and one wrong way.
Now mathematicians, on the other hand... but they can't do anything useful, so we should all be fine.
It's unlikely that someone outside of your ethnicity would be a match for a bone marrow transplant, BUT it is very possible to get one from someone of the opposite gender, in which case all blood tests for sex would reveal that you are of the gender of the donor, even though it would in no way affect hormones or other sex-related characteristics.
