Joy's quote about "always apply a Just Law rigidly would be the greatest injustice" is crazy too. The whole point of Judges is to create a human aspect to the Law (and this is why we should repeal mandatory minimums), but Joy want's to....
ALWAYS applying a just law RIGIDLY, is what mandatory minimums are all about... that's why it's an injustice. You're arguing the same side here...
If that was the subliminal message I guess I'd be here less.... I think the implementation language is not an issue really... although I think I have seen Java flash "Don't hate me because I'm bloated" several times... might just be me though...
I think I thought of it myself, but who's to say really? All these subliminal messages floating around I'm not sure I ever actually "think". ------ www.chowda.net -- Student seeking summer intership. Chea... inexpensive programmer! ------
Slashdot must use subliminal messages because 2 months ago (before I found slashdot) I never read any news on the net. 2 months later I religously read 3 news sites and passivly read about 10 others and the refresh button on my browser is wearing out!
Food for thought: Imagine subliminal messages were shot at you via morse code your entire life and then one day you actually learned morse code. What do you think would happen? ------ www.chowda.net -- Student seeking summer intership. Chea... inexpensive programmer! ------
yeah whatever... rationalize this!

The Mind of God

"I cannot believe," writes Davies near the end of the book, "that our existence in this universe is a mere quirk of fate, an accident of history, an incidental blip in the great cosmic drama. Our involvement is too intimate. The physical species Homo may count for nothing, but the existence of mind in some organism on some planet in the universe is surely a fact of fundamental significance. Through conscious beings the universe has generated self-awareness. This can be no trivial detail, no minor byproduct of mindless, purposeless forces. We are truly meant to be here."
This one paragraph turned me off the rest of this book. There is no meaning to life, no greater purpose, and no great answer to "Life the Universe and Everything". I dont understand how he finds it so hard to believe that the mind is the culmination of trillions of random events since the begining of the universe. Given a universe so vast it's incomprehensible, and a time span that could just as well be infinite, it would be rediculous not to believe that self consciousness would evolve by chance. 1,000,000 monkeys at 1,000,000 keyboards will eventually write the greatest book ever writen, but they still wont understand a work of english (or latin for that matter).
If I back up a minute and assume there is some purpose to the universe, that still doesn't mean it has anything to do with consious beings! Maybe "God" had a thing for big rocks and the purpose of the universe is to see what happens to all the rocks.

Its time to really put some time and money into exploring our solar system and beyond... We waste billions of dollars a year on people who cant take care of themselves and people who cant plan for their own future, but we know next to nothing about the universe around us.
Its time to devote some resources to expanding the home of the human race. Big deal we screwed up a billion dollar mission, that shouldnt slow us down! Mistakes are common in new, complex fields!
If we took all the money we waste on "save the lazy people" programs and spent it on space exploration, not only would we have a ton of new jobs but the technological impact would be stagering. I know I'm offending all the bleading hearts out there, space is our greatest untapped resource, but the cup of idiots and gold diggers doth overflow. The only way to help those less fortunate is to grow the human race... create more niches and less people will suffer with what we have.

Genetically massaged traits aren't that much further in the future. Its only a matter of time before upgarding memory isn't just for computers. Soon genetic research could make calculators obsolete and reduce education to a pill. Moral objections? NONE. I'm already in line for increased intelligence, faster learning, better body and quicker reflexes (ktron wont stand a chance). The human species is an abomination, week, slow, stupid and scared. If I can pay to have someone remove the crap I've been stuck with since birth and remake myself in my own image, I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough! One might say that this sort of thing can only lead to loss of individuality and conformity. I say thats bullsh*t! Whats important is the content NOT the container. Chowda
