How can de Palma make a film like this when superb fiction like Red Mars is out there as an example of how to tell a story about Mars that's interesting and even relevent. I went with my college-age kids and they wanted to start a Conga line when they formed the 4-person line to cross over to the supply ship. "It'll be the next Rocky Horror Picture Show" they said. Except of course there were decent tunes in Rocky... The sad part: that image, looking down on Mars from high orbit -- that was fantastic -- like being there. Well, we have to leave out a storm which is covering about 5% of the planet while we watch....damn, and that's the problem....they can't get ANY single thing right without screwing up so many other parts. An the homage to 2001 - the endless shifting viewpoints in the rotating space-ship. Haven't we demonstrated that there are real nasty coreolis problems for folks in such a structure unless it's REALLY big? Sigh -- it's just not fairj for a film to have so MUCH wrong with it. Buy Red Mars, rent 2001, write your own story. DON'T go to this.
