Cosmic Castle on High Point Rd has a good selection of titles for sale, and a knowledgeable staff. They also stock tabletop RPG's, t-shirts and other paraphenalia. And pocky!
What we really need is to skip this silly stuff and find a way to plug a computer RIGHT INTO MY BRAIN! Imagine just plugging a wire into the back of your head, and having all nervous input and output to the hands redirected toward a computer, which would send back the appropriate sensations! That would impress me.
Oh yeah, I wanna give access to my brain and central nervous system to every script kiddie with half a clue worldwide. Can you say, 'remote control of the unwilling'?
Certainly Jon Katz and I can agree not to dabble in things that will harm our neighbors or make the world less hospitable for our descendents, but will everyone else?
Other than a utilitarian philosophy asking us to restrict ourselves to protect our environment, what incentive do individuals have to *not* act in their own self-interest in such matters? None. Legislation at a national level is obviously not a solution, but an oppressive local gov't isn't any better, just less well-armed.
Bullshit. Out of 96,000 votes that Nader received, five percent of those -- 4,800 votes -- would have voted for Gore if only to keep Bush from winning. Five percent. That would've saved Florida and thus the election.
So it's all come down to Florida, with a gap of less than two thousand votes.
Nader garnered more than 96,000 votes. Okay, maybe not all those folks would have automatically voted for Gore, but certainly more than a few thousand of them.
There's your direct evidence right there. None of this makes me happy. But it's obvious.
The problem with the "independent" state of mp3 is that there's no incentive to go find stuff that you might like, but that you haven't heard of yet. What Curry proposes would give greater exposure to innovative, new bands that need the audience that an interesting format could provide. You want a collection of songs to sort through at will -- that's fine. I'd rather have a mix of stuff I know and stuff I don't know but may like. I regularly switch back and forth between a stream and my own playlists, and I suspect others do as well.
It's a mistake to assume that "formats" would change the way mp3's are available now; it's likely both would exist side by side.
The best possible answer, IMHO, would be for more people to utilize Live365 to broadcast their own lists, and better recognition of those who do.
This is a very old issue. There have been laws against going into somebody's residence and taking their stuff, without their permission, since about 5000 years ago. This is legal security - if you steal, you will be punished by the legal system. This has probably worked - probably there have been less thefts than there would have been without laws against stealing. In fact, had these laws never been written, there might be no such concept as "theft" and therefore no way to discuss "theft" and decide that it is a bad thing.
Og took my stick! Why he do that? That was mean! That's bad! That's kind of a no-brainer, isn't it? C'mon. Ever had something stolen from you? It sucked, right?
Corporations created popular culture? Wrong. Corporations took advantage of artists and manipulated popular culture to their advantage. They didn't create it themselves, they just used it. Being anti-corporate doesn't mean one has to stop using things one gets legitimate pleasure from. Drinking Diet Dr. Pepper ice-cold gives me slack. Why fight it? That doesn't mean that I can't dis the corporate structure for being uber alles. Gain pleasure from whatever will give it to you. If you don't want your bucks profiting corporations you don't like, then find a way to gain the same pleasure without it. p.

The real money is in solutions to these problems, which are in dreadfully short supply, unlike rants such as this one. Give me a break.

Why don't they just put a brain in a jar wired to a T-1 and get it over with?
1. What role do/must/should powerful psychedelic drugs play in becoming a skillful hacker?
2. What are the chances of spending a day doing a LinuxBierWanderrung (sp?) at X-Day this year?
And yes, both are serious questions... (sigh) They just won't listen...
