Rather more than a bit! Plus he's a tad ignorant on many crucial issues. "AT&T split into hardware and software companies"? Jeez, I hate to imagine where he got that from.
The only believable explanation for this episode is one buried in the middle of the story: Schön has mental health issues. He's not just a con artist, he's a compulsive con artist, the kind that lies even when he doesn't need to, or is likely to come back and bite him. How else to explain his behavior? He must have known that nobody would be able to reproduce his results. It's a pretty common syndrome.
Of course, if you focus on Schön's mental state instead of on the "failure" of the peer review system you don't have a story!
Well, Privoxy looks like it'd be a lot of work to configure. On the other hand, it's got good pretty good docs, and working with it will probably teach you a lot about how http works in the real world. Which is actually the main reason I just downloaded it.
"...the answer to your question is "a hell of a lot more than you think; certainly way more than for Linux".
True enough. Perhaps MacOS's apparent application problemis magnified by the fact that the Mac platform has to be popular enough to make a profit for Apple. And I've heard it said that the disappearance of just a few crucial apps -- most of them from Microsoft! -- would be all that it takes to push the platform in oblivion.
Well, it's no worse than 75% of those "Ask Slashdots".
I think the basic problem here is that the editors each have some kind of quota. But nobody's standing back and saying, "Is this editor really making an effort to select interesting, relevent stores, or is he just going through the motions?
I've been making shows
Of trading blows
Just hoping no one knows
That I've been going through the motions
Walking through the part
Nothing seems to penetrate my heart!
Jeez, why does anybody pay attention to such an ignorant rant? Wishful thinking is not news. So maybe Linux users are willing to pay for their apps. Big deal. So are Mac users, and we all know many ports that platform has.
On the other extreme, George Takei (Sulu) is said to have refused to push a particular button on the helm console because it didn't "make sense".
Let's face it, the Franchise takes it for granted that hyper-zealous fans are going to keep coming, no matter what they do. So why bother doing any actual creative work?
Don't blame the writers. The franchise is notorious for underpaying and even cheating writers. They seem to think that writers are like teamsters -- you only hire them because they have a strong union. So they spend millions on a special effects, and a few thousand on writing. Who neeeds a story, as long as you got lots of Good Stuff?
I very much doubt it. In fact, I don't see where they're going to find the radio spectrum to support most of the applications that are supposed to roll out when 3G gets implemented. Hey, we're fighting over spectrum now, and half the things people want to do with it haven't even been implemented.
Not that bad. RTF is readable by WordPad and Word, so all Windows people and most Mac people can read it. You can even read it with StarOffice, assuming it doesn't have too many weird formatting constructs.
Also, Perl comes with a bunch of utilities for translating POD into other formats, including HTML.
People who use "Reference Guide" in a title should be shot. A Reference is a collection of reference material, a Guide is a task-oriented description of the product. I can see calling something a "Reference and Guide" (though nobody does), but WTF is a "Reference Guide"?
That's a rhetorical question. It's a clear sign that the author couldn't think through the problem of what, specifically, the book is. Doesn't bode well for the technical content itself.
It's always near the earth, is affected by the earth, so you can call it a moon, just not a true satellite.
Well, it's affected by the earth, sure. But it's hardly close. Its average distance is about an AU -- as far from the Earth as the Earth is from the sun. By the end of the century, Cruithne will regularly move as far away as 2.5 AUs. That's almost as far away as Mars gets its on the other side of the sun!
Yes, but from a geocentric viewpoint, the moon's path describes a circle with the earth at the center. From that same POV, Cruithne follows a kind of horseshoe with the sun at the center.
I'm missing something. I thought a moon was an object that orbited a planet. Cruithne's orbit is profoundly perturbed by the Earth's gravity, but it stil orbits the sun.
Well, I'm not a gamer, or a doctor, or anybody else who needs that kind of resolution. But I'd kill to have a 19" by 11" LCD monitor (that's almost enough room for three full-page windows!) at an ordinary resolution. But nobody seems to be selling that. Oh well, couldn't afford it anyway.
Google does something like this. They have tons of cheap computers with cheap hard drives.
Your logic is sound, but Google is a bad example. As I understand it, they mainly rely on keeping their indexes in RAM. There was a good Slashdot story on this a while back, but I can't seem to find it: "Google" is not useful search term!

A moment after entering the previous post, I realized I should have titled it "Editor Automatons". Oh well!

Think of all the terrible things that would happen if computers had the ability to make life or death decisions!!!!!

That's actually a highly descriptive title. Flame retracted.

This also happens in Tibet and Southern California.

I need an adapter that will transform me into Freddie Prinz. Only needs to work with Sarah Gellar!
Isn't that what I said? 12/10 = 1.2.
Ain't hindsight great? It allows you to sound wise without producing any testable arguments.
