Actually, water is very bad for fiber. If I remember correctly from class, its the -OH ion in particular that interferes with and degrades the fiber.
Most, if not all, outdoor fiber is encased in some sort of shielding to protect it from UV rays, water and rodents (squirrels, mice, rats, etc). Submarine fibers are encased in multiple layers of metal and other materials to form a heavy protective cable. Some possible water hazards -- sharp rocks, anchors, propellors, sharks (yes, sharks!), and obviously the water itself.
dumbass..... Purdue's Computer Technology program is ranked as THE BEST by many national and global organizations. We are not a "trade school type education." To get your degree, you still have to complete the basic Purdue grad requirements. You've obviously never been in a CPT class ( with an attitude like that, you'd be dead in the water ), so why don't you stick to a subject you know about?
What do you want to do? We have Information Systems or Telecommunications & Networking as majors. Within those, there are numerous sub-tracks to choose from. Courses? Systems Analysis, Administraton, LAN, WAN, Programming ( C++, Java, VB ), and more! Visit http://www.tech.purdue.edu/cpt for more info.
No, we do not do "applied" science like EE or CS majors. We have more of a business focus. In short, how to APPLY your education in the real world. To tell the truth, CPT grads have been commanding salaries above and beyond CS for years now. Our graduate placement has been 100% for years as well. The average graduate's (BS) salary is $48K/yr, Masters grads average $70K.
You know, I really hate it when people put down something just because they know nothing about it. They make assumptions and don't bother to find out if its true or not. Bleh!
Companies actively recruiting CPT majors as of Septemer 1999: 3M, CIA, Dell, Dow, EDS, Exxon, GTE, IBM, Intel, Lockeed Martin, Microsoft, Motorola, NSA, etc.
In short, I'm paying to maintain MY email address. If I don't want to receive SPAM, I shouldn't have to. Why should I PAY to receive crap that I wouldn't want to see even if it were FREE?
Example: I have an account on a certain nationwide ISP. (soon to change) I have NEVER given out the email address. I NEVER use it when submitting forms and what-not on web sites. Uh, come to think of it, I NEVER USE IT. I normally use my school email. Its much more reliable than any other service. I only use my ISP for connectivity. I use my school email for everything.
Which account do you think I receive the most SPAM on? Hmm?
I get more spam off my email address from my ISP (that I don't use!) than I have ever gotten before on any account. I repeat, I GET NO SPAM ON THE ACCOUNT THAT I USE MOST. Uh, wtf? If anyone has any ideas as to why this might be, I would love to hear them.
The ISP is EarthLink. We dial up on UUnet PoP's. Avoid at all costs. I'll be switching ISP's within the week.:-)
But that's the point! Its an invasion of *MY* privacy to continuously receive spam when I don't want it. I *PAY* for the right to use my email service, why should I have to put up with unwanted spam? Its my email, I choose who to give my address to. If I want ads from a business, I will give them my email address. Most spam is not of a viable nature. Most of it consists of "get rich quick" or "get this thing cheap here."
The ability to be anonymous isn't the issue. I could care less if somebody wants to surf and email anonymously. As long as this person doesn't use their anonymous status to bother me with spam.
Personally, I don't think email should be anonymous. Its a form of communication. How can you trust an anonymous email? There's no way to validate the sender's name, address, etc. It would be like trusting a guy on the street wearing a ski mask and disguising his voice. You can't see his face and you can't recoginize his voice. Would you trust him? I view spam the same way. They falsify return addresses and their own identity - and they want me to buy stuff from them? HA HA HA HA. Uh, no.
Spam is evil. I wish the clueless morons who use it would just spontaneously combust or something.
As if the current crop of G3's aren't expensive enough..... My employee is shelling out close to $3K each for fully loaded 333-G3's. A typical PII with a similar config would cost little over half that.
And people are saying that MS has a monopoly?
This is insanity! Sure, the G4 might be a fast computer..... But who gives a sh*t if nobody can afford the damned thing? Until Apple figures out that this proprietary bullsh*t isn't going to cut it, most people will stick with Intel/AMD.
Why buy a G3 (or G4) for $3K when you can get a PII for $1.5K?
And to top it off, you get MacOS. The OS that doesn't even have the sense to tell you what the hell its errors mean. We constantly get random errors with all of our Macs -- 7.5.3 all the way up to 8.5.
"Gee, why did my Mac lock up?" "I haven't the slightest clue."
I run DiskDoctor, rebuild the desktop, reboot... and now it works? WTF? What was wrong in the first place? Can it be prevented? Beats me, since the damned thing won't tell me what the _real_ problem is. I don't give a rat's ass how "easy" the MacOS GUI is to use... from a support perspective its a goddamned nightmare! At least windows will tell you what's wrong! (and in most cases, it can be easily fixed)
Oh, to hell with it..... why can't Apple just die?

Can a trade school give you that?
