  1. why just sci-fi? on Designers - Are You Influenced By What You Read? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Not to assume or suggest that all fiction should have a point or a message/moral to it, but all fiction has the power to inspire us or make us question reality/society/etc.

if you take something away from a work of fiction (or film, or recording, or game) then you will be all the better for it.

  2. Strong linux support for phone applications on Is Linux Used in Production Telephony? · · Score: 1

I have been working on combination web- and phone-based sweepstakes for the past year and all of our telephony is run on a RedHat system. It has never once been down and handles thousands of calls a day without breaking a sweat.

  3. at&t chicago suburbs on 3 Megabit Cable Modems, Anyone? · · Score: 1

    Cool news.

Before the excite thing went down, I was getting 550K/sec down from at in the chicago suburbs.

For the first few weeks after excite went out, I, like everyone else on at, was capped at 1.5.

However, they seem to have removed the cap at least somewhat..I normally get anywhere from 250 - 350K/sec on really fast sites. It seems they wanted to do this quietly, but I sure don't mind!

  4. Ads are proof of Spielberg's fear.... on You Look Like You Need a Guinness · · Score: 1

I am a little tired of hearing speilberg talk about how independent he is now that he has his level of success. If he was independent he would not need to plaster his movie with ads for actual companies. The fact that the ads were for actual 21st centurty companies did not add to the plot, it only added to the mountain of evidence that spielberg is a frightened director.

He is afraid to trust his audience to understand an advertisement without an existing company. Who would not have understood that he was in a clothes store when the gap commercial plays? He is also afraid to trust the intelligence of his audience, hence the 5 minute explanation for what we just saw and the overwhelming message that "everything is ok" at the end of the film. It was bad enough that his boss made the big speech at the end, but the voiceover and the ads really brought this movie down.

  5. Prior Art on CDDB Joins The Bad Patent Club · · Score: 1

Check out glasbead (found it off of Rhizome, a net art site).
here is part of the description: "glasbead is an online multiuser 3d object allowing players to create a myriad of soundscapes in a shared realtime environment. "
here is the URL: http://www.glasbead.com/ I seem to remember half a dozen other java applets that came out and provided shared audio spaces on the net. They could easily be described by this awful patent.

  6. Re:Quit bitching & do something. on Dmoz (aka AOL) Changing Guidelines In Sketchy Way · · Score: 1

Exactly. Slashdot has the clout to publicize a completely open effort to do the same thing and make it community-owned (of course VA may have some of the same trepidations eventually that AOL does, but /. hasn't changed really, since the buyout). What about contacting the editors and setting up a new system? Open source code so multiple sites could hook in with the main site. That way shady content is linked in, but hosted on the shady person's server. :)

  7. Re:Katz does good, almost on Buffy and Dr. Varnus · · Score: 1

Good comparison, Katz. Although you were a little light on the buffy (drawing the ire of other /.ers here), there is definitely an underestimation of the actual users of information (be it tv or medical researcy) by the controllers of such info.

One problem, though. You rely heavily on yesterday's new york times article on the subject, but you are very slacking in quoting your sources. Please be a little more professional in the future so your readers are clear where the information is coming from. I am referring to the quote about the spread of literacy, mainly. for shame.

  8. Re:The BEST argument for using WYSIWYG tools on Ask Slashdot: Which Web Authoring Tool is the Best? · · Score: 1

The other best argument for graphical editors is the fact that there are artists in this world, as well as technical people.
When you think in images, it helps you to work if you can design in images. Like most of the posters who are for graphical tools, if you realize that they can't solve every problem for you (what can?), then you will be a very happy person indeed.
(btw - if you look at my site, it was done with Dreamweaver with some text editing in Homesite, some in pico when the files are on the server.)

  9. Katz, Usefullness and other miscellany on Assorted Katz Hype · · Score: 2

    hey all.
Katz is a writer. A frequently good writer (and just as frequently over-simplistic and utopian), but there are many reasons that he is a good contributor to /. (and I wholeheartedly agree with a previous poster that he does seem like the ONLY writer here).

Even though the site is subtitled "news for nerds. stuff that matters" this is not limited solely to discussions of purely technical merit. There are people that are interested only in the technical aspects (linus) and there are people who are worried and concerned about the implications of our technology. Technology created in a vacuum helps no one. Anyone remember the Manhattan Project? The technical acheivements of splitting the atom were controlled by an intense environment of military competion and secrecy. Hence, we have intense nuclear escalation up through the middle of the century, then we have inferior technology designed to try to keep up (Chernobyl).
While that was a mighty digression from Katz, my point is, that SOMEBODY here needs to remember that this stuff affects people. I, too, skip through the account of the success of Katz's book. I would probably read it, but with a healthy dose of skepticism, like we should all read ANY source.
And someone did point out that these are editorials, personal sometimes in nature, and not academic dissertations.
Add more writers, more voices and don't forget that this stuff affects people, not just other programmers.

  10. Penguin Computing on Ask Slashdot: Quality Graphics in Linux? · · Score: 1

Hi. I checked out the penguin computing site and you could get a system with the number9 32M card that comes with the 19" SGI flat panel in it with the X-Server fully configured and everything.

Not under $1000, but still good.
