  1. Well I own a hybrid car... on What Does the Future Hold for Low Emission Vehicles? · · Score: 3
Purely electric cars won't be happening any time in the near future. In focus groups, people's two worst fears about electric cars have always been:

    1. what if it breaks
    2. Do I have to plug it in.

Since right now there is no real way generate electricity without using gasolene, people will never buy purely electric because they are afraid that if there isn't a plug then they will be stranded somewhere. This is why the future is with hybrid cars, at least for the time being.

Basically, a hybrid is a car that runs on a gas engine, and when the engine is turning it also turns an electric generator which charges a special battery. For example, with a normal car, when going downhill the engine is in idle and its still using juice, but nothing is being produced. In this situation, the gas would be off and the battery would charge.

Also, in a normal car when you break the extra energy is dissipated in heat and friction. with this, that energy is harnessed to turn the electric motor. The result is that when the car is going under 25 miles an hour, the gas motor is completely off and its super efficient as well as quiet. Because of this, the emmisions of these cars are two to four percent of a normal car. In other words, one hybrid equals about thirty normal cars.

They are actually pretty cheap too. The one we got is a toyota prius, it just came out and its 19,900 bucks. pretty good. They've been out in japan for a while and sold about 30,000 units, and they are making 10,000 for the U.S. and if they sell out they will make more. The one problem with this is that the batteries are still pretty expensive to make, and they have to come down in price. Still, with the full package for under 20k and you don't have to plug it in, this is going to be a big seller. Also, it looks exactly like a normal four door car.

In general, people want to do what's right for the environment, you just have to make it easy to swallow. That's what hybrids do. The ease of a normal car, but with the preformance near an all electric vehicle.

  2. My 2 cents... on FTC Gets Angry Over "Free" PC Offers · · Score: 2

In my humble opinion, the worst form of PC deception has always been the monitor advertisemnts. All the monitors you see in the magazines and stuff have the pictures just pasted into the frame, they're not really rendered on the monitor. When I was little, I could never understand the concept that the picture of the monitor showing pic of a jaguar from so close you can see its whiskers is really no better then the monitor down below showing a pacman board, and that the just try to make the more expensive ones look better. Oh well, just my thoughts.

Dante's Inferno was one of three parts of his Divine Comedy which was published in Italy during the Renaissance by Dante Alagheiri(sp?). It became world famous because it was the first book to be published in vernacular, ie. the local language and not latin like all other books of that time period were. The book was about how he went through hell, purgatory, and then heaven guided by the poet virgil so that he could find his lost love Beatrice. Anyways, your probably thinking of the wrong book, but if your not please tell me where to get that anthology, major suckup points in history class :P

If there are any major toy companies or wealthy indivuals out there, you can email me at Alex3917@hotmail.nospam.com to discuss the sale of rights, that is if anyone is still interested...Oh well, at least theres still good old Natalie Foozball.

The only thing i don't understand, is what does "this space to let." mean? I was thinking it meant "this space for rent.", but I got confused. As for the slogan, I think "The eyes never lie." is the best one out of those. Wow that is damn cool, a lot better than the stuff on adbusters

  7. There absolutely is..... on The Leased Life? · · Score: 1
And the reason is essentially that people want more and more material items. After a point, one simply cannot acquire enough resources to own them all at the same time, so instead we own different things at different times and sell off what we don't want to get more money to buy new things.

For example, look at African tribes even today. You get a mud hut and clothes, and you own that forever. The more you want, the more often resources are going to have to change hands, simple as that. The best example of this is day traders, they want so much that they use all their money and have to sell a day later regardless of weather or not the stock has gone up.

Overal, I think this is a good thing. Variety is the spice of life, and I really see no problem with more than one person having ownership over something as long as its at different times.

  8. what philip is pushing...... on Ars Digita Founder Philip Greenspun · · Score: 1
Check his site--www.photo.net. I think someone already replied saying he uses canon mostly, and i think that's correct. One of philip's tips is to only get camera's with aspheric lenses, because they produce much sharper images than those without the aspheric type lense. I know that Olympus and Canon use these, but there not that popular yet among other companies. Also, Philip has said a number of times that plain old point and shoot cameras, as opposed to fancy SLR, are the way of the future.

Hmm what else is there...I know that in the summer Philip bought a waterproof camera, the one he used to take pics of the grand canyon that are posted on his page, I dunno what type though. oh well, check photo.net for more info.

  9. I don't understand this X-box thing..... on Microsoft Unveils Gaming Console · · Score: 4

By the time this so called 'X-box' is out, will anyone care? Currently you can get a system with a celeron chip that's almost as fast, and keep in mind that this is a computer we're talking about. Now by the time the x-box with its 600 mghz chip hits the market, we'll be able to get a complete system minus the monitor with similar specs for the same price. Why then, would anyone choose the x-box over a computer, since the games for the x-box and the computer will be so similar? personally, I'd much rather get the computer over the x-box, so that at least I could run linux!....Now sure, this sounds incredible now but by a year and a half, I doubt that many people will care. Computers for the smart, x-box for the stupid and the uninformed!

  10. I'm noticing an interesting trend in beta tests... on Diablo II Beta Sign-Up Monday · · Score: 3

From the Diablo 2 beta signup page: "You must have a valid e-mail address" This sounds straight forward, but in reality this statement is a bit deceptive. When most websites with beta tests say this, what they really mean is that you must have a non-anonymous email account. This means that accounts on hotmail, yahoo, rocketmail etc. are not honored. I think for most of the people reading these comments, this will not be a problem. However, I know a lot of people who don't know how to configure their outlook express or whatever client their using to get the pop3 account their local ISP provides. Because of this lack of technical knowledge, many are forced to turn to services like hotmail. I know your all probably pretty tech savvy, but I think that you should still know this before you sign up for this beta, as well as beta tests in general. One solution to this is to get an email account online at a lesser known place. A great example of this is http://www.hushmail.com This will give a free email account with 128 bit encryption (hence the name). Well there are countless other places you can turn if you have this problem, but I just wanted to inform everyone so that you can all have the best chance of making it into the Diablo 2 beta!!!
