  1. Lag in games on The Modem Lives On · · Score: 2

Everyone complains about lag on action games online, and granted playing with 150-350 ping on my 56k modem in Q3A is really pretty handicapping. But think of it this way: If you play the games on a 56k and get relatively decent at them...to the point where you can go out with a generic rocket launcher and nearly hold your own against the guys owning people with railguns and rockets down at 50ping and less, and the change to broadband (as I hopefully soon will) think of the higher skill in gaming you'll have. Not only would you have the ping for click/kill, but the instinct to predict where people are going. In my mind that makes for better players.

  2. But........don't let it on What Does The Future Hold For 3D Myst-ery Games? · · Score: 1

degenerate into a EverSmack/RatQuest/RatSmack/EverCrack like world, where GMs (who NEVER respond)...more importantly, lots of them make quests and world is rather open ended, but its all so confusing for someone who doesn't know what to do. Relating to RT3D, theres a fine line to have between open-endedness and vast chaos...

  3. Europe would assume overlord duties. on How Dependent Is The Internet On The U.S.? · · Score: 1

I tend to believe that America would regress into a state of complete anarchy with teenagers whining about the lack of access and business relying on snailmail. Then of course we'd all rediscover the joys of ham radio and meanwhile Europe would twist the web to their own distored media image and assume overlord duties over the Earth. But thats what I tend to believe.

  4. It's not necessarily robots... on Spiritual Robots Symposium · · Score: 1

In the latest issue of Wired they have a mega-article by Bill Joy discussing why, "The Future Doesn't Need Us." Within, there is an article by a certain someone discussing the following... In esscence, supposing computers become smart enough to facilitate many of our daily tasks, two things would happen. 1)We would maintain control over them or 2)We would give complete control over to them. Supposing we maintain control over them, that control would be given to only an elite few... Those elite could be 1)malignant, 2)paranoid and thus deprive us of information or 3)altruistic. In either of the first two cases, the human race loses big. In the third option, we become so accustomed to this system of computer control, we are nothing but domestic animals. Supposing we gave control over the computers, the computers would completely rule our lives (though perhaps not evilly) and we would be incapable of living with out them. Thus, we would be dominated by them. The above is a summary of an article written by the Unabomber. Whats frightening is that if robots DO ascend us spirtually/intellectually, we would be in for a shocking dystopian experience.
