One wrong click can ruin your whole morning. I know better than to not look at the author of the article before I read on...
*smacks forehead*
If only you could filter out authors on/. as easily as you can when reading a newsgroup. Katz would have been in my killfile long ago. 95% of his articles are just flamebait anyway. The other 5% are totally uninformed. This one happens to be both. Who is going to start the "Fire Jon "Troll" Katz" petition? Tell me where to sign...
No, I don't think he is trolling at all. His comments were a truthful slap in the face. There are many instances of hypocrisy here on slashdot. What is wrong with liking an OS because it works? People hate Windows because people hate Microsoft because people hate Bill Gates because people hate others having more money than them. Windows may be unstable, but tell me where hardware would be without big dollars behind the OS Developer to constantly revise that OS to support all the latest and greatest hardware that comes out. We would all be using 8086's still.
Using a highly sophisticated mathematical algorithm and the processing power of an entire network of PC's, we have determined the exact time of the splash down to a very precise time span of about 6 years. Further refinements by me have placed the numbers at 2001-03-28 01:12:58.

What's the point you ask? Let me explain...
Being a person who traveled extensively for more than a two year period, just being able to listen to something on the radio other than NPR that had a familiar sound was a dream never realized.
You have a point so far as 99% of the country doesn't want to hear Joe D.J. from Bucktooth AR, but what this technology does open the door for is access to satellite radio from all over the country.
Imagine going on vacation to the Grand Canyon and still being able to pick up your favorite radio station from home the entire way! Or even better, imagine having to go to Europe on business all the while listening to your home town D.J. keeping you informed of news and other events while you are away. That would help take a bite out of the alienation one often feels when submersed into a new culture in my opinion.
This idea has so much more potential than just what will come of it in 5-6 months. There are a slew of other doors that will open once this one has. Mobile television, truly mobile Internet access, and heck, maybe one day this may provide an actual use for all those iridium satellites huh?
