The article questions the value of children learning to type in school. I always imagined that teaching an alternative method of text input that used t9 predictive text (or similar) but didn't allow manual text entry would be a great; as they would have to spell words right in order to enter anything into a computer.
Suddenly essays (as well as facebook / twitter) become a more pleasant reading (i.e. no horrendous spelling mistakes or internet 'shortcut' words).
Of course, this wouldn't fix grammar and punctuation.
