YESSS! "making things go". I thought I was the only one. My girlfriend didn't understand when I explained to her that the Sun 3/50 occupying most of my room wasn't actually much *use* to me, I just wanted to make it *work*. She was astonished when I gave the machine to a friend only a few hours after I had achieved my goal.
I would love to be a sysadmin, because it's about the only thing I know I could be quite good at. Unfortunately, I'm a Risk Analyst, which is interminably dull by comparison...suggestions, anyone?

I think this perhaps defines one of the fundamental differences between the so called 'script kiddies' who sit at home or in college and flame-on at the slightest provocation, and those of us who have to face the reality of sucky, proprietory software EVERY DAY in our jobs (and lets not forget that it's not only Microsoft who makes crap software).

Yeah, sure I live and breathe Linux in my spare time, but I also spend 40 hours a week wrestling with Windows 95 and Seagate Holos 6. It is incredibly frustrating watching the office machine crash for the nth time, knowing that there is a better way of doing things, but I'm only 'allowed' to use it within the safely padded confines of my own home.

If I should ever see the day when my office computer runs Linux, I don't imagine there could be anything further from my mind than whether it uses GNOME or KDE.
