as mentioned elsewhere in a comment, there is an hdtv set w/ a built in decoder. rca's 38" 16:9 hdtv has been shipping for around a year.

it's actually one of the cheaper direct view hdtv sets around. my dad got his for $2100 (floor unit), but they retail for around $2500. here's a pretty good online retailer that carries it for cheap.

though you do lose out for paying less, the menus and UI suck my innards and it's RCA quality so I don't expect it to last too long. some other complaints have been its lack of digital video out. here's a bunch of user reviews for the tv.

i mean, i wouldn't mind 2mbps on a laptop if i happen to be doing work in the field and i'm not close to an ethernet.

in these applications the latency isn't so much an issue as the having any connection at all to the internet. and 2 mbps is great for email or web research.

or is this impractical? blah! =)

"The roots of most mental disorders lie in some combination of biological and environmental factors," the report says. "No single gene appears to be responsible for any mental disorder. Rather, small variations in multiple genes contribute to a disruption in healthy brain function." Under certain environmental conditions, it says, this disruption can result in mental illness.

I think it's very important for you to keep this paragraph from the article in mind. While i agree with you that drugs are sometimes over used, there are many disorders that have both biological and environmental cause and no single method of treatment (biological, cognitive, or behavioral) proves effective by itself.

Nowadays, psychologist believe that psychological disorders are subject to diathesis-stress, where disorders usually have a genetic background but require some sort of enviromental stress to trigger it.

In addition you have to keep in mind that when psychologist diagnosis a mental disorder, they are talking about extremes. All mental disorder are diagnosis according to the DSM-IV criteria. These criteria try to standardize methods of diagnosis and make sure the assessment includes not only social deviance, but also significant impairment of functioning.

It should also be mentioned that a lot of assessment is dependent upon the POV of the psychologist giving the assessment and is therefore subjective.

I think in general, the treatment community is trying avoid the pitfalls of what you're stating.

Now, if only i remember anything like that on my abnormal psych exam in 42 minutes. *grin*

  6. VERY large underground accelerator, possibly next on Grand Unified Theory Possible by 2050 · · Score: 1

this is a bit offtopic and i haven't read the entire article (skimmed it) but i'd like to relate something:

When i was in high school, i attended a saturday morning physics program at fermilab (il) which has a particle accelerator. the program was pretty much a lecture series by researchers there about "basic" concepts, theories, and trends in high-energy physics.

one of topics that was covered is the need for faster accelerators in order to acheive the energy necessary to do the experiment that would verify any unifed theory.

the lecture mentioned that (at the time) fermilab had the fastest accelerator, but the new CERN accelerator (which is active now, i assume) would eclipse it.

now the part i found interesting was the fact that the accelerator at CERN would not be rivaled for a while because the only way to get significantly faster would be to build it larger. on the scale of a few HUNDRED MILES larger.

one of the proposals that the lecturer showed us for a future accelerator would be drilled by robots and would span one or two states!

i couldn't find anything that references this on the site so maybe someone who works there or has more knowledge on this stuff can help me out? please? *grin*
